Woodpixels

Brian | January 24, 2008 | 8:02 pm

Wood Pixels This is an interesting idea - it’s called Woodpixel. It’s a commercial product that lets you create your own pixel art. It comes with 100 wooden blocks with a different wood tone on each side and it comes with a holder to hold the 100 blocks in place. This would be a great way to make some classic/retro video game art. Their site shows a Space Invader, Mario, and a (poorly done) Pac-man Ghost. They are taking pre-orders now - no word on price. I bet it’s expensive though.

1up Mushroom Lamp

Brian | January 22, 2008 | 8:07 pm

1up Mushroom Lamp Ok, this isn’t exactly a craft… this is a 1Up Mushroom Lamp sold by the folks at Guruguru. Pretty cool looking and affordable too at only $8.50. They don’t say how big it is though, which is aggravating. I bet it would be easy to make if someone put their mind to it - any video game crafters up for it?
UPDATE: It’s gone from their site now.

Rubik’s Companion Cube

Brian | January 20, 2008 | 8:10 pm

Rubik’s Companion CubeStephen loves his Companion Cube and it loves him. He wrote a very good tutorial on how to convert a Rubik’s Cube into a Companion Cube (from Valve’s Portal). He suggests buying a brand new Rubik’s Cube, but if I were doing this craft, I would try to get a cheap used one at a yard sale or thrift store or something instead of paying $10 for a new one - but I’m a cheapskate.

Needle-felted wearable Pong tribute

Brian | January 17, 2008 | 8:15 pm

Pong necklaceThis item is available on Etsy. The creator describes it thusly: “it is entirely needle felted out of wool fiber with sterling silver wire, chain and clasp”. I’ll be honest, I don’t know what most of that means - I don’t sew. I do know that is a cool craft though.

Super Mario Ceramic Tea Set

Super Mario Ceramic Tea Set
Topgeargorilla is showing off the Super Mario Tea Set he made about 3 years ago in a high school ceramics class. It includes a mushroom teapot, a bomb-omb sugar holder, and a star spoon. He says he’s not happy about the whole thing, but I think it looks great!

Perler Mario Box

Brian | January 15, 2008 | 8:21 pm

Perler Mario Question BoxMy daughter got a Perler bead set for Christmas. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was “That would be great for videogame characters!” So, last weekend I made a Mario Question Box. It now proudly hangs from my rear view mirror in my car. Now I’m hooked. I want to do a thousand different things with them. You’ll see lots more Perler crafts here.
