Someone’s going to take away my post-titling privileges, I can tell. ;)

Seriously, though, how could you not be psyched about this awesome pirate bag, put together by Three Geeks and a Needle? It’s a look you could rock at any pirate-, steampunk-, or Victorian-themed event! (Am I wrong? I think those skulls & crossbones, whales, and sea monsters are quite frilly.) I have to admit, I covet these ladies’ bags. Look at the inside, all that attention to detail!

And there is the suggestion on their site that they have made TARDIS bags in the past. And Tron. And pretty skulls. Seems like they found a great source of geeky fabrics! Maybe if we’re very kind, they’ll share the info? :)

My first post!

My name is Spyral. I’m pretty much a mad scientist of crafts (think Young Frankenstein not Human Centipede).

This is my first post on Geek Crafts. It was supposed to be posted yesterday but better late than never. I am wicked excited to be contributing to Geek Crafts! I love odd things therefore, a lot of my work is reflects that in some crazy way. Since I am weird, and slightly narcissistic, for my first post I thought I would share some of my more abnormal creations with you all.

This is a cephalothoracopagus monosymmetros necklace. If you’re a medical geek you know that cephalothoracopagus monosymmetros means “connected at the head and thorax.” It is one of my tattoos. I like to think of them as a symbol of sisterly love. My sister and I are connected at the head and heart. Cephalothoracopagus monosymmetros is on display at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia, my Mecca. This pattern was originally posted on the AntiCraft. While I was knitting it I got lazy and made a few changes. I also turned them into heat pads.

This is a tiny Old Gregg that I knitted for my little brother. I think it came out just awful but my brother likes it.

This is a Fetus Coin Purse. I found the pattern on The AntiCraft. I love that site! It is really creative.

I joke and call this piece my masterpiece. It was my first time knitting with multiple colors. It’s a Cephalothoracopagus monosymmetros bag.

Star Wars Uncut: Director’s Cut

Misleading title I know. Here’s the story. In 2009, Casey Pugh asked thousands of Star Wars fans to help remake Episode IV: A New Hope, but there was a catch. The iconic movie was broken down into 15 second pieces and users were asked to remake one of those pieces. Now, we can finally watch the entire film, stitched together from thousands of submissions.

This is seriously the entire movie, and clocks in at over 2 hours. Enjoy.

Crocheted Katamari

Ooh! I could have a real katamari that actually picks things up! (Well, a “real” katamari, at least.) I just need to coerce one of my knitter/crocheter friends into making me one using this pattern. Evidently you can also needle-felt a similarly magnetic katamari using the instructions in the how-to guide I Felt Awesome. Watch it in action here.

My son is very much into Batman right now, and whenever he takes an interest in something geeky, I do my best to encourage it. Right now I am raising him on a solid diet of 1960′s, Adam West era Batman and blueberry waffles…because…blueberries are awesome. A S’Minchin of Miraculous Matilda

Matilda is one of the quintessential geek kid’s books; the story of a nerd girl who uses her brain to bring a pinch of justice to the world is bound to resonate with swots of all ages. A couple of years ago I managed to get myself to Stratford ‘pon Avon to see the RSC’s christmas musical version of the book and was completely blown away by it – one of those performances that remind me why I work in theatre. Anyway, since then the production has transferred to the West End, won a load of awards and caused a considerable dent in my finances from ticket purchasing.

Laura, or LollyPolly as she is known over at the Minchin fan forums (the music for Matilda was written by our very own rock nerd Tim, who of course did a fantastic job with Dahl’s dark comedy), made this brilliant cushion commemorating the show’s opening song – which echoes the prologue to the book in that we get to hear about how miraculous all the children except Matilda are. It’s a fantastic example of how effective even simple embroidery can be if the colours, fabric and design are well chosen. With any luck Laura will now have caught the needlework bug and will go on dazzling us with her work in future.

Everything Alice Book Review, Craft and Giveaway!

When I heard that there was an Alice book to review I jumped at the chance, and begged. I have loved everything Alice (how fitting!) my whole life.Everything Alice: The Wonderland Book of Makes & Bakes by Hannah Read-Baldrey and Christine Leech is a truly beautiful book. Even if you aren’t crafty but love Alice, this would still be a good book to own as the pictures and projects are stunning.I actually made two projects from Everything Alice to show you. The first one is so simple, even a non crafter can do it. No, really. It’s called Dress Me Alice and White Rabbit. This project is so simple, that you can even cheat a little, which I totally did. They say to copy the pictures and then glue them onto thin cardboard. I simply copied them onto white cardstock and cut out the middle man. The downside to this is that you really have to bend the spine to get the book to lay flat enough to copy it without shadows and stuff on the sides.

I also made the Cheshire Cat handwarmer. I sewed it by hand and you can tell I am by no means a seamstress. It was fun to make though so that really is all that matters. I’m going to actually keep mine in the freezer for headaches.
