Spectrum Fantastic Art Live

This weekend my daughter, husband, and I checked out the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! convention in Kansas City. Spectrum publishes an annual art book featuring “a regular showcase for the best fantasy, science fiction, horror, and otherwise uncategorizable artwork”. This is the first year they have also hosted an art fair/trade show “for those who take delight in the worlds of What If?…”

According to the show guide book, “Fantastic art can be a slightly skewed, off-kilter view of reality or a full-blown creation of imaginary lands and the people–and creatures–that live there.” Given that definition, the art fair definitely provided examples of the fantastic – from fairies to the macabre, there was a little something for everyone.

Finally, we were also lucky enough to see some friends from college there. One of my good friends from the dorm was there with her artist husband, Jeff Miracola, who is of course (shall I say it?) fantastically talented. He has done a lot of art for Magic: The Gathering cards, and is focusing now more on digital art. Check out the gorilla and owl faces in the background of this photo.

Do or Do Not, There is No Try.

I did try, and I failed. When I see things like this, I just feel so craftily (that’s a word now) inept. Though I have attempted to try and crochet (with minimal success), my skills are far below things like this. I envy those that are talented like this.

Who isn’t addicted to the Legend of Zelda? It has worked its way into the ranks of Best Video Game Ever list. Link has slashed his way through countless enemies and into the hearts of many of us. I’m not going to say that the creations of Your Organ Grinder aren’t a little on the weird side, because they are. I mean, they’re felt organs. But they’re also kind of rad. Particular favorites here include the brain necklace, brain hairclip, and nose embroidery hoop.

The Best Colleges Online has posted an infographic entitled The Sacred Order of Geeks that mentions various types of geek like Apple Geek, Star Wars Geek, Film Geek and… wait for it… Craft Geek. It describes a Craft Geek as:

Calls televisions “picture boxes”
Can knit from zero to bivouac in 6.8 seconds
Is on a first-name basis with the staff at Jo-Ann Fabrics and Home Depot

I’ve no idea what the television comment means or has to do with us crafty geeks. What do you think in general about this infographic?

Needle felted naturalist

Spring is starting to turn into summer. Change is in the air. Squirrels are finding their autumn treasures. Some lucky acorns will grow into mighty trees. Does are throwing baby showers for one and another in the woods and birds are looking for some action.

I have a feeling my favorite naturalist enjoyed this time of year. My hats off to The Greedy Crocodile for her felted busts. If you are more of a physics or literature kind of person, her shop includes some luminaries from those fields.

She’s also got an amazing sculpture of my girl, Marie Curie. I hope to see some more famous women in the future as well!
