Okay, I know we’re a bit past gingerbread season, but I saw this in the Geek Crafts Flickr Pool tonight and it cracked me up. And when something cracks me up, I feel the need to share it with all you lovely readers. Flickr user ckrolczyk made a bunch of mutant gingerbread man ornaments out of felt, including the growing-in-popularity Cthulu.
A few years ago, I attended a school designed to teach cooking & presentation, and my favorite part of the course was the garnish. We had instructors that could make a watermelon look like a bouquet of roses straight from the garden. So, naturally, when I saw this Jar Jar Binks carved from a jimaca root, I was excited.
Ken posted this amazingly detailed Jar Jar Binks Salad on Cooksden, lamenting that if he had carved any other character from Star Wars, he wouldn’t have wanted to cut into it with a knife. There is a detailed how-to in the article, and no worries, you won’t have to go buy a million different kinds of knives to pull this one off yourself.
Neil Patrick Harris stole our hearts as the geek-cum-laud child doctor of Doogie Howser, M.D. , but he came back for a doctor show of a different kind with the Doctor Horrible Sing Along blog. Beefranck posted this awesome Dr. Horrible Cross Stitch on craftster (found via whedoncraft). Complete with lyrics from song “Brand New Day” this is one cross stitch sure to grab attention.
Craftster user whateverjames cross-stitched up this great “I love you more than Star Wars” sampler for his fiance for Valentine’s Day. Those hearts? They’re light sabers bent into hearts.
Angelcallie has redefined fandom with this amazing Doctor Who Plushie that she posted on her livejournal page. This Time Lord is complete with his ever-important stop watch, and when his shirt is removed, you see The Doctor’s all important two hearts!
I loved this plushie from the moment I saw it, and fell even deeper in love when I read her reasoning for doing Doctor number ten first.
I hope to make all the doctors eventually, but I started with Ten because he’s my doctor.
Any real fan of The Doctor knows the importance of “your” Doctor. Your first, your favorite.
My Pet Virus by Shawn Decker is probably the funniest book you will ever pick up. Now, I admit, this isn’t something you expect to hear about a real-life-story of a kid with hemophilia who ends up contracting HIV through a blood transfusion, but that’s only because you don’t know Shawn Decker. Shawn has faced down his HIV positive status with a twisted sense of humor and a series of anecdotes that will challenge what you think you know about prejudice, AIDS and life as a teenager while making you laugh until your guts hurt.
In addition to writing My Pet Virus and performing in the band Synthetic Division, Shawn, and his HIV-negative wife, Gwenn travel the world educating people about AIDS and safe sex. They believe that if a “positoid” and a “negatoid” (Shawn’s terms–read the book and find out more) can make a sexually active marriage work, then maybe other people should be aware of how to do it, too. In addition, Shawn has recently finished his first fiction work, a story about vampires, and if you are anxiously awaiting the release, you will find updates at his blog Shawn & Gwenn: Blog.
Even though Shawn has just finished one of the more hectic times of year in his life, he agreed to sit down and answer a few questions for our Geek Crafts readers.
So you grew up in a small town as a hemophiliac, HIV positive kid who loved
Depeche Mode…did you ever see yourself traveling the US speaking publicly
about your cult-hit memoir and safe sex?
I really had no idea I’d be talking about my HIV status with my friends, let alone strangers. At age 20, around the same time I definitively decided that Black Celebration was Depeche Mode’s finest album, I realized I wanted to open up about my HIV status. At that point, I’d been diagnosed half my life, and it seemed like an exciting thing to do. Also, I was inspired by Pedro Zamora, who’d been on MTV’s Real World reality show. He was young, HIV positive and speaking at college campuses. He passed to spirit a couple of years before I started educating about HIV, but I was able to meet his partner, Sean, and his roommate, Judd Winick, both of whom I thanked for the inspiration.
