Let’s get one thing out of the way, right now. I love cake. Cup cakes, wedding cakes, pancakes. Cake is good. In addition to being delicious, cake is a great medium for art. Yeah, I said it, I think amazingly decorated cakes are art–and it’s not just because I like eating art. Kristen made this Super Nintendo Cake out of red velvet (0ne of my favorites!) for her husband’s birthday. If you’ll believe it, it was her first try at a sculpted cake! Very well done, and I am sure, very delicious.
There aren’t a lot of nice things about living in the desert, at least not until Fall/Winter time, but one nice thing about living here is the amazing Crossroads Cafe and Tavern, where I was having breakfast when the painting to the left caught my eye. I took in the various pieces by the artist I would later discover was the one Rik Verlin Livingston, and I knew I had to track him down and introduce my Geek Crafters to his “Sci-Fine Art“.
We communicated in e-mails a few times before I met Rik at an artist reception held at the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce, which featured more of his work, to include some really great comic books. He was friendly, funny, and seemed to handle the attention (and the controversy surrounding one of his pieces) very well. I was really excited to be able to ask a few questions about his craft, his feelings on censorship, and of course, time travel.

Patti Schiendelman at Make: Magazine posted this awesome Rubik’s Cube project sent in by a user named “Mad Maxine” (I like her already). If you’re going to take this challenge on, you had better be an expert level Rubik’s solver (or at least be ready to become one). This would make an awesome project to hot-glue all together and hang on your wall.
Dr. Who is a new and an old classic, kinda like Battlestar Galactica. It has a loyal following of thousands and thousands of fans. So is it surprising that some of these fans have made crafts to honor their favorite TV show? I think not. Here you will find some of the various Dr. who crafts we were able to find on the interwebz. Mr. T is awesome. WrestleMania, Rocky III, The A-Team…did you know Mr. T has three kids? How cool must that be to have Mr. T as your dad! I pity the fools who don’t think these Mr. T crafts are totally rad.
Etsy seller Kezzaroo sells these super cute Little Mr. T dolls made of felt at three inches tall. Kezzaroo also offers this Mr. T trivia tidbit:
