Nerd + skirt = Sknert?

Guys, can we talk about what Ashley Mertz is doing over at Go Chase Rabbits? Because, it’s like…whoa.  Whoa, slow down Ashley because I can’t even keep up with all these cute skirts and I have so many questions:  Where is the fabric coming from?  How do you have the time to make all these? What shoes would I wear with the Yoshi skirt?

If Yoshi isn’t your speed, 1) What is the matter with you and 2) Ms. Mertz likely has your geek beat covered from Tardis skirts, Pokemon pettis, Star Wars, LoTR…even a periodic table mini-skirt.  It’s all there, it’s all cute.

Rushmore Lapel Pins

Rushmore Lapel Pins

I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited for Wes Anderson’s new film Moonrise Kingdom.  It all started with Rushmore, and it never really stopped.   Wes Anderson’s keen eye for nostalgia, anachronistic clothing choices, and his keen use of 60’s and 70’s folk songs in just the right places have firmly ensconced him in my heart.  I came across these on the old Etsy, lapel pins for perfect attendance and punctuality.  Too perfect.  The seller appropriately named SteveZissou also has some pretty awesome cuff links.

Keeping Geeks Warm!

Keeping Geeks Warm! It’s not hard to realize that no matter what kind of geek you are, whatever you do involves using your hands and fingers at some point.  Whether it’s typing away on a keyboard, working a game controller, or creating something in craft or art, use of the hands and fingers ends up being involved.  That’s why it’s important to take good care of your hands and keep them warm.

Gayla Oglesby has come up with the perfect pair of mittens for your geek of the binary nature.  While designed to appeal to the programmer and Linux lover, these Geek Mittens are geeky enough for anyone to want to wear.  She even provides the chart for them here.

The Cake is Not a Lie

The Cake is Not a LieIt’s a hat!  Yes, Nimcraft has created a free pattern for a knitted Portal Cake Hat that is absolutely adorkable.  This hat, a recreation of the chocolate cake in Portal 1 and 2, is also a quite delectable head warmer during cold months.  Knitted in worsted weight yarn, Nimcraft gives suggestions for making it in other weight yarns as well.  Not familiar or a fan of the game portal?  That’s okay, I don’t think there’s too many people that don’t like chocolate cake anyway!

Let the Games Begin…

Let the Games Begin... And with the opening of the new Hunger Games movie, based on the book, of the same name, they have. I may be one of the few people left who have not read the books yet but I recognize the symbols from it after all the publicity surrounding it.

I also recognize hand crafting talent and these pieces definitely fall in that category. A stenciled shirt and polymer pins bearing the Mockingjay symbol hat people have come to know from this series. The work of Miss K, daughter of PJCrafty, her mother who is very talented as well, the pins and shirt are just a few of the fandom items she has created in the past couple of years.

I do believe, the odds will always be in her favor with this kind of crafty talent.

Your Slip Is Showing

Okay, so you definitely couldn’t wear this Blood n Stitches zombie slip dress every day, but it’d make a great costume. You could probably whip one up quite easily yourself, if you’re so inclined. Also, how entertaining would it be if you just wore it around the house? You know, to the laundry room and to answer the door when the UPS guy comes and such…. Maybe it’s perverse, but I feel like that’d be highly amusing.
