Steam(punk) up your goggles

This past Halloween, my husband and I decided to go steampunk with our costumes, so I spent quite a few hours trolling the interwebs for ideas and props. I had great fun making a necklace, bracelet, and earrings to add to the look. I also loved the idea of steampunked-out goggles, but most of the ones I found looked pretty plastic-y and cheap, so I went goggle-less for the evening. <sad face>

I am pleased to report that I recently stumbled across a very do-able steampunk goggles tutorial by Susan Dennard, which, as one commenter put it, is “a billion shades of awesome.” I can’t wait to add a set of googles to my steampunk wardrobe! It’ll be even cooler to say I had a hand it making it myself.

Fully Knitted Captain America Cosplay

I crochet, so I can appreciate the time and effort that went into this costume: Cosplayer Fangirl Physics knitted this Captain America costume, for SacCon in March. It’s made entirely of assembled knitted pieces. She doesn’t carry the Captain’s shield, but she has a pair of knitting needles in her bag to fight freedom’s foes.

Cosplay Fun at Planet Comicon 2015!

I spent the past weekend at Planet Comicon in Kansas City, and even though I spent the weekend working my booth (The Costume Wrangler’s Closet), I did get to see some pretty awesome cosplay. Above are some of the amazing folks from the Iron Brothers of Topeka (IBOTS).

This little Rainbow Dalek exterminates with cuteness according to her mom!

I had to run this boy down to get his picture for a friend who’s obsessed with Sharknado. I particularly love the faux gore on all the sharks. How creative is this kid?!

I snuck a snapshot of this cosplayed in a seriously cool Groot costume.

Technically this isn’t cosplay, but the Kansas City R2 Builders Club have got some pretty amazing R2s, like this R2-Q5, an evil R2 whose allegiance belonged to the Empire!

This chainmaille She-Ra was a volunteer from Amanda Lynn Chainmaille Creations.

Transforming Cinderella Dress

Belinda Christie has created the ultimate in Cinderella costumes: one that transforms from Cinderella’s poor, tattered dress into her ball gown. Other than this magical Cinderella get-up, Belinda recently also won the “Best Sci-Fi/Movie/Animation Cosplay” category at a convention in Salt Lake City. She was dressed as Merida from “Brave.”

Guardians of Geekdoms

Hello All! I’m sure most of you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy by now (and if you haven’t, why?? Go, go! I’ll wait.). Baby Groot is undoubtedly one of the cutest things to hit the big screen, and I joined the masses in trying to create my own version of him for a friend’s Christmas gift.

Since I couldn’t find any plushie versions, I decided to make my own, and documented the process so I could make a Baby Groot tutorial!

There’s only one baby Groot that I believe is cuter than mine:

Featured on FashionablyGeek, Reddit user S7ar-lord’s wife made this costume for their baby boy for Halloween, and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn tweeted the picture, saying he was “out-cuted”.

If retro-media is more your style, there’s crafts for you too! First, in honor of the “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” that Peter Quill aka Starlord listens to, 30MinuteCrafts created a printable cassette tape box, perfect for any cosplay, or just a geeky place to keep things!

If you’re looking for a place to keep your valuables, Paul Mason the DIY Guy, from Geek & Sundry Vlogs, has posted a cassette tape wallet video tutorial so you can protect your cards and ID in a truly awesome way.

Star Wars Craft: Crochet Twi’lek Hat

CostumeWrangler recently shared a round-up of Geeky Winter Hat patterns – here’s another one you might want to get to hookin’: Sara Jean’s crochet Twi’lek Hat from Star Wars.

Sara Jean designed the hat to look like Aayla Secura, a Twi’lek Jedi Knight seen largely in Star Wars comics and the Clone Wars animated series, as well as Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. The hat pattern looks like it’s pretty quick to stitch up, and averages 4 out of 5 stars on Ravelry. Pretty impressive, considering Sara Jean was 12 when she wrote the pattern!
