Make a Sonic Screwdriver Quilt Block

Have your choice of sonic screwdrivers at your fingertips with this cool (and FREE!) paper piecing pattern from Fandom in Stitches. You can thank Fandom in Stitches contributor Gretchen Kohlhaas for this great idea. You can download the pattern here, but keep in mind this one’s geared towards folks who know what they’re doing! Paper Piecing in a Flash

Designer Michelle Thompson has come up with another amazing paper piecing pattern for quilters, this one featuring everyone’s favorite speedster, the Flash. You can find the pattern on Fandom in Stitches, along with dozens more superhero and pop culture paper piecing patterns. I think what makes Michelle Thompson’s patterns so striking is her use of decorative stitching to enhance the details (take a look at all the line work–it’s all satin stitching done by machine!). This pattern is definitely not for the faint of heart, so if you’re new to paper piecing, I’d suggest looking for something with fewer pieces to start with. You can find all sorts of ideas and even tutorials on Fandom in Stitches. Go forth and conquer, quilters!

It’s Definitely a Wonder!

The folks over at Fandom in Stitches have outdone themselves with this free Wonder Woman paper piecing pattern. Though, this 10″ pieced and embroidered quilt block is not for the faint of heart. If you’ve never done paper piecing before, I’d start with something much simpler (like one of their patterns labeled beginner/advanced beginner–the Black Widow one looks like a good block to start with.).

Peace, Love, Pi

Yes, we’re almost to another Pi Day. What’s Pi Day you ask? Why March 14^th , of course, and with 3-14 close at hand, I couldn’t resist highlighting this wonderful paper piece quilt pattern by Jennifer Ofenstein of Sewhooked.com, simply called Peace, Love and Pi.

One of my favorite crafters and someone who never fails to prove her creativity, Jennifer created this design for her husband and son. The three designs of the peace sign, heart, and pi make a great wall hanging or can be used individually for whatever projects you can dream up. You can purchase her pattern here.

One Does not Simply Quilt Mordor

One must start at the beginning with The Hobbit. Which is what Jennifer Ofenstein has done with Fandom in Stitches latest long-term project, There and Back Again.

Announced in August, it officially began with the first block’s pattern, Gandalf, designed by Schenley Pilgram and posted on October 5, 2011 and subsequent patterns were and continue to be posted on the first Wednesday of each of the following 12 months. Also pictures is The Road designed by Lilja Björk Sigurdórsdóttir.

Haven’t started yet? Not a problem, each month, the links are there to previous patterns released for you to access and download to work on at your leisure. The project is a collaborative effort between four Fandom in Stitches designers, Michelle Thompson, Lilja Björk Sigurdórsdóttir, Schenley Pilgram, and Jennifer Ofenstein.

Never done paper piecing before? Still not a problem as Jennifer has some wonderful tutorials to help you learn. So come along on a Hobbit’s quilted journey to there and back again!
