Tutorial: Geeky Photography with Flash Stencils

Help! My house is being Space Invaded!

Lounge Space Invaders

Alright it isn’t – it’s just clever camera trickery in the form of flash stencilling. But it’s a pretty neat effect and a lot of fun, so I thought I’d share with you how it can be done.

You will need:

  • A camera capable of taking long exposures (30 seconds is about right)
  • A tripod or stable surface
  • An external flash (or a very bright torch)
  • A box
  • Card
  • Craft knife and cutting tools
  • Black tape
  • White paper

Do the Weave – Space Invaders Style

Mini-eco‘s Kate Lilley (the same gal behind the adorable 8-bit popup cards) has perfected a method of weaving paper into Space Invaders. Which is a bit like spinning straw into gold, except geekier and less lucrative. Still, what a cute decoration for a gift! Who cares what’s inside the box if this is the wrapping?!

Space invaders cuff links

space invaders cufflinks

Do you have an old-school geeky dad in your life?  With father’s day right around the corner, Virginie Millefior might have something up his alley. These little aliens are “sawn-off from a sheet of brass, molded and cast into brass to create two identical space invaders cufflinks.”

If you are an aficionado of old video games, but have no need to link cuffs, fear not! Ms. Millefior also has necklaces, rings, and other trinkets that pay homage to our favorite games of the late 70s/early 80s.

Space Invaders Quilt Plan

My PMQG guildmate Elizabeth Hartman just posted about her plans for piecing a Space Invaders quilt for her nephew. She used one of the Kyla May video game prints I also loved (found at Cool Cottons here in Portland) as inspiration, and she’s hand-drawn a blueprint for a super-unique pixelated quilt top made with Kona solids and prints…

From her post:

I played around with a couple of different ideas before I determined that I didn’t actually want to use any of the print on the front of the quilt. Instead, I decided to play with the pixelated look of the print and make the quilt top into a super-enlarged version of the fabric.

I can’t wait to see this quilt project unfold!

Space Invaders Hat!

I can’t knit… and people like Craftster user queenofmarigold really make me want to learn.

Queenofmarigold knit this super cute reversible space invaders ear flap hat and figured out how to do the space invaders sprites herself! I’m sure to those of you out there who knit that’s a “Well DUH that’s pretty easy.. all you gotta do is…” … but to us non-knitters it’s like WITCHCRAFT!… awesome witchcraft…
