In honor of the recent release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, I thought I would share this cute Ninja Turtles amigurumi pattern from Laura Carrascosa Fuster / Las manos de Alea. I love their little round yellow bellies and felt accents, and the little loop to make them keychain/lanyard-friendly.

My husband saw the new movie over the weekend and wasn’t overly impressed, but also wasn’t under-impressed. “It’s a Michael Bay film. Zero expectations equals lots of fun,” he said. He likened it to the first Transformers movie. Have you seen it, and if so, what did you think? How did it compare to the first Turtles movie? Also, what fun geeky amigurumi projects have you tried?

Battlestar Galactica Craft: Starbuck’s Mandala

It’s been a while since I shared one of my own geekcrafts, so in honor of Geek Pride Day, I thought I’d share this little beauty – a crochet representation of Starbuck’s mandala.

In the rebooted “Battlestar Galactica” TV series, the character Kara Thrace, aka Starbuck, paints various versions of the same mandala image throughout her life, her unconscious attempts to recreate the “Eye of Jupiter” (depicted  in the above left image, from the second season episode, “Valley of Darkness”). I was immediately drawn to these abstract paintings with their bold colors and strokes, and thought it might be fun to recreate in crochet form (as I’m not much of a painter). When I found Marinke Slump’s Crochet Mandala pattern, I knew immediately how to put it to good use. The pattern was quick to work up and I completed it in a weekend. I stitched it onto a light blue canvas for hanging on the wall.

Interesting geek trivia: the mandala on the wall in Starbuck’s apartment was actually painted by Starbuck herself, actress Katee Sackhoff, according to the Battlestar wiki.

We previously featured a Starbuck’s mandala knitted hat project here on GeekCrafts, and I’ve also seen a quilt that incorporates the image. Have you seen any other mandala geekcrafts floating around the Internets? I’d love to try out some more!

Geek Knitting: Geek-a-Long Blanket

Geek-a-long Blanket squares by Megan-Anne Llama

Greetings geekcrafters! Today I wanted to share with you an ongoing geek project  – Latte and Llama’s Geek-a-Long blanket.

They are releasing one geek-themed square knitting pattern each week, including references to Sherlock, Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, the DC universe, and Avatar. They have also posted a FAQ for the project. The patterns are free, but they are encouraging donations to Child’s Play.

Like any good “a-long” project, it’s fun to interact with others who are working on the same project. It looks like this one has some good participation on Ravelry, with 500+ members in the group.

What fandoms or images would you include in a geeky afghan?

WOW What a banner!

Crochet Horde banner by Kristin Dragos

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, my family of geeks has long been fans of the massively multi-player online role playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft (WoW). And as long as they’ve been playing, they’ve always played Horde. So I was quite pleased when I ran across this crochet Horde banner by Kristin Dragos.

When I showed it to my husband, he told me it would be ok if I made it for him. :) I think it would also make a great addition to my son’s dorm room.

Game of Thrones Crafts: Amigurumi Starks & Lannisters

Now that HBO has announced the premiere date for the start of Season 4 of Game of Thrones, I thought it would be apt to share some Game of Thrones crafts.

Ravelry designer Kati Galusz has created a series of medieval amigurumi patterns inspired by the GoT characters, including the Starks (Eddard/Ned, Catelyn, Sansa, Arya, & Bran, plus the direwolves) and the Lannisters (Jaime, Cersei & Tyrion), plus Khal Drogo, Khalessi, and Khalessi’s dragons.

After the “Red Wedding” episode near the end of Season 3 (spoilers at GoT Wikia), we can’t wait to see how Season 4 progresses! Will you be following along?

Crochet Superhero Shield blanket

Captain America shield blanket

Just in time for the premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., look at the fun Little Super Hero Blanket I found over at Lion Brand Yarn. Methinks it looks an awful lot like a Captain America shield, no?

Made with super bulky yarn and an “N” hook, I bet the pattern comes together pretty quickly. It would make a cool area rug or wall hanging for a kid’s room. Looks like you could also easily adapt it to a pillow, so it would be even more shield-like. What fun it would be to toss that around the room while pretending to save the world!

Anyone else looking forward to the new Joss Whedon series? We certainly are in our house!
