The Sacred Order of Geeks Infographic

sacred orders of geek

The Best Colleges Online
has posted an infographic entitled The Sacred Order of Geeks that mentions various types of geek like Apple Geek, Star Wars Geek, Film Geek and… wait for it… Craft Geek. It describes a Craft Geek as:

  • Calls televisions “picture boxes”
  • Can knit from zero to bivouac in 6.8 seconds
  • Is on a first-name basis with the staff at Jo-Ann Fabrics and Home Depot

I’ve no idea what the television comment means or has to do with us crafty geeks. What do you think in general about this infographic?

  1. I thought the infographic was cute… It’s hard to sum us all up in 3 lines but on a few of them i thought it was pretty spot on.

I’m gonna take a stab at the Calls televisions “picture boxes” line. Perhaps it is meaning that as a Craft Geek we have the need to see everything from a craft standpoint where things are either to be used as a craft or are something that once was one.

PS Love this Site! I check it everyday!

  2. I didn’t think they made much sense tbh, maybe because I am not American but a lot of the references were lost on me- like what is Old Navy? And we don’t have Jo-Ann Fabrics or Home Depot.

But I wish I could knit from zero to bivouac in 6.8seconds!

  3. To me it reads like a non-geeky person summing up their assumptions about geeks. You get it on tv a lot, the cliched ‘geek’ as imagined by someone who has never met one. (Which is why I like Big Bang Theory which mostly avoids that)
Although I must admit I went into HobbyCraft last week and the chatty assistant admitted that they referred to me as the ‘crazy-hat lady’ after seeing a picture of my black beast of arrrggghhh hat – which means the HobbyCraft staff talk about me when I’m not there!!

  4. I have to agree that it reads like a non-geeky person summation about geeks.

Personally, I’ve never called a t.v. a picture box…and it’s MUCH easier to watch shows & movies on the computer, because you can FREEZE the frame & get screencaps of that sweater, armor, or whatnought that you’ve just seen go whizzing by that calls out to be made.

    Just saying. :-)
