World of Geekcraft

Today is an exciting day at Geek Crafts! Our own Susan Beal, who blogs here every Wednesday, has a new book being released this week. The fittingly titled  World of Geekcraft is making its debut appearances for the Official Blog Tour both here at Geek Crafts and over at  Craft!

World of Geekcraft by Susan Beal

In addition to doing an incredible job with coordinating and designing this amazing book, Susan also was able to contribute several of her own projects. Of her contributions, my favorite is the Star Wars Terrariums. I believe when Susan told me she was making these I replied with a hearty, “Hell, yeah, I can’t wait to see those!” Here they are for you to see:

Our Renee contributed an awesome essay called The Resurgence of Atari and Nintendo.

Here’s an excerpt:

A big part of the renewed popularity of Atari and NES games lies within the breakthrough idea that it’s actually cool to be geeky. The word “geek” has transitioned from describing someone wearing a pocket protector to someone who is hip, in the know, and totally capable of keeping up with technology. With new video game consoles, cell phones, and computers coming out faster than most people can keep up with, being a geek has its advantages. As loads of average Joes jump on the geek-chic bandwagon, it seems the hardcore geeks feel the need to separate themselves; perhaps wearing an old Atari logo is a way of saying, “Yeah, I was here first.”

And I was lucky enough to contribute a fuse bead portrait of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Doing these portraits is a long process and I like to do them row by row. Here you can witness Buffy gradually showing her face:

Over 10,000 beads later, I had a complete portrait:

I know 10,000 beads seems like a lot of work – and it is! – but it’s totally worth it to see the finished product.

Krys and I headed out today and spotted World of Geekcraft in its natural habitat, Barnes & Noble:

If your local bookstore doesn’t have World of Geekcraft yet, you can buy it online at:

After poring through the whole book, I’ve decided my absolute favorite project is Garth Johnson’s Planet Commemorative Plates. I’m totally going to make these for my husband’s computer lab.

  1. Awesome idea, is there a table of contents available?

My favorite geeky thing is my tardis mobile phone cover that I knitted myself a few months ago. My phone is larger on the inside after all..

  2. Fave Geeky Thing….42…that is all =0)

although anything that can be knitted it also great as I’m on a bit of a yarn spree at the mo.

Knitted 2 Superman dishcloth baby blankets for a friends little girl and currently half way through a slightly random Star Wars/Star Trek/Superman/Pac-Man hybrid type blanket….I think it looks goood though!

  3. Oh, it’s so hard to pick one favorite geeky thing.
I love geeky references in everyday things, like the Deathly Hallows pendant you recently posted, or my R2-D2 Droid2.

  4. Loubie –
How about knitting something 42? 42 stitch dishcloth, 42 rows long, in 42 different colors? ;)

  5. My favorite geeky thing is using geeky quotes in daily speech. The joy I feel when I see the recognition of a kindred spirit in a stranger’s eyes. We’re still flyin’ ~

  6. My favourite geeky thing? Terry Pratchett’s Discworld! I am scary obsessed and have been told to stop bringing the books home because there’s no more space in the house for them.

  7. I’ll have to admit to Doctor Who being my favourite geeky thing, with a slight preference for the Tardis and K9 :)

  8. This looks nerdtastic! I think we’re all nerdy about something. Right now I am swimming in Portal II, which has caused a replay of the original and plans to make all kinds of things that would show that GlaDOS is my homegirl.

  9. Mary Beth and Loubie!!! Why didn’t I think of that simple answer, that explains everything!!! lol. the anwer is always 42.

  10. I love how geeky things are being subtly worked into modern culture. It used to be you’d have to drop a quote into conversation to see who’d respond and get it, or walk around with the Enterprise emblazoned on your shirt, thus outing yourself as a geek, too. But now, you can wear a sleek Deathly Hallow’s pendant, or a scarf where the fringe turns out to be the tentacles of Cthulhu! By making geek nods so commonplace ans sleek, it’s actually become that much COOLER when someone DOES respond! The evolution of the geek culture in progress! Pure awesome.

  11. My favorite geeky thing are some hobbit-feet baby booties that I found online. I can’t wait to knit them.

  12. I saw this at B&N and loved it! My favorite geeky thing is…hmmm…what a hard question to answer, I have so many favorites! I love video games, freaking out over BSG and Firefly, the cosplay, the culture, everything!

But I really LOVE geeky crafts and would love to win this awesome book!
