Star Wars Craft: DIY Ewok Hood

Ewok hood by Stephanie Woodson

We recently re-viewed the Star Wars movies, and I was struck anew by the Ewoks, those bear-like creatures from the Forest Moon of Endor, seen in “Return of the Jedi.” More than just cute, they’re actually pretty tough little critters, instrumental in bringing down their share of stormtroopers and AT-ST walkers.

Some fun Ewok trivia (courtesy IMDb and Wikipedia):

  • Several Ewok lines are in the Filipino (Tagalog) language. Most Ewok lines, however, were inspired by the Kalmyk language, spoken by nomadic tribes living in Russia.
  • The word Ewok is never spoken in the movie, nor are the individuals (Wicket, Paploo, etc.) referred to by name.

Stephanie Woodson of Swoodson Says was likewise captivated by the furry little warriors, and created a fun Ewok Costume Hood for her son – it’s basically a balaclava with fuzzy ears. Clever! I’m sure my son would have loved to romp around in one of these!

Have you ever rewatched geeky shows or movies and come away with a new appreciation for a character or story line? I’d love to hear in the comments below!

Ewok Softie Tutorial

As I start to hear Christmas music being played (it’s only November!), I realize that I need to start on planning gifts for people. Nearly everyone who watched the original Star Wars wanted an Ewok at some point. I know I did! While you probably can’t give your friends a real Ewok, this adorable stuffie toy might just work!

Ewok stuffie toy

Mollie from Wild Olive created this stuffie tutorial for Star Wars day, May 4th, and it’s one of the cutest Ewoks I’ve ever seen. She provides the pdf pattern for the Ewok and its hood, and the only thing I would change about it would be to add arms and legs. The only things you need are two fabrics in the colors you’d like (she used corduroy), some stuffing, and embroidery thread. So easy, and super adorable! Guaranteed to be loved by Star Wars fans of all ages – give it to a friend or keep it for yourself! Happy sewing!

Dress like a Ewok

Dress like an Ewok

Why? Because Ewoks are awesome! Whether you fell in love with him in Return of the Jedi, or he stole your heart with his “Starcruiser, crash!” antics in Caravan of Courage, we all seem to have a soft spot for Wicket the Ewok – and now you can dress up like him too! (headstands and battling giant spiders optional)

Kristen Stevenson from TinyPurrs.com came up with this neat scoodie (that’s scarf and hoodie, don’tcha know?) pattern for all you crocheters out there and has released it as a free Ravelry download.

Everyone needs a little Ewok now and then…

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched the Star Wars movies. Quoting lines from those movies comes as easy as lines from Monty Python’s Holy Grail. Of all of the characters, I have to say my all time favorites are the Ewoks. They’re little, furry, adorable and resourceful.

Wicket the Ewok Amigurumi

So I’ll just come out and say it, as far as Star Wars goes, ewoks are my favorite. Normally, I like the tough heroic types, or the super villains, but in Star Wars, I love ewoks. So when I was cruising the Star Wars Blog and saw this adorable Wicket the Ewok Amigurumi made by Angry Angel on craftster, I was smitten. The even more adorable part? She crocheted this cute little guy for her own cute little guy, and you can recreate it with her patterns!
