Fairy Garden in a Broken Pot

UCNudZX

Today’s “Geek Craft” might not be the usual conventional type of craft. However, it is pretty resourceful. A Fairy Garden is a miniature garden complete with structures and actual living plants. It is designed to give your green thumb a place to tend year-round and to lure fairies and with them, good luck, to your home. It’s a tiny space created and tended with love.

SweetCheesus posted this piece on Imgur last June. It’s a one year anniversary gift to his girlfriend, another Imgur user named slantedlight12. It’s sitting in an 18″ clay pot that he found at a local flower shop, and bought all the pieces and parts for under $50, and built it in about four hours. Half of that time was spent just breaking up the large pot.

It’s a nice bit of gardening and upcycling, as well as being pretty creative. SweetCheesus lives in North Carolina, so he’s got hot and humid weather most of the spring/summer. The plants came from a farmer’s market but he didn’t get the names of them.

KISS Garden Gnomes

KISS Gnome

Time for me to post one of my own crafts tonight: some garden gnomes I refinished into Gene Simmons and Peter Criss of KISS.

Both of these guys were used and pretty worn when I got my geeky little hands on them. I used some Super Sculpey to smooth out some areas of Peter’s blousey sleeves, and then more to build up his boot tops, gauntlets and the front of his little shirt. For him, I used the Super Sculpey to smooth out where Gene’s vest and shirt ended, because he was going to have a pretty significant belt. All of this made him very front heavy. I wanted to use the tool handle he still had in his hand to make him a bass guitar to hold, but because of his front weight, he would have just tipped over with a bass attached to his little gnome body. After that, I primed them both very thoroughly. They were each painted with Testor’s model car paints, and have sequin and bead embellishments.

Gardening Mario Style

With the coming of March, my mind turns to starting my container garden. I love working in the dirt, planting seedlings and then cooking with the lovely veggies and herbs that I watched grow. It’s a labor of love for me.

Last year,  the concept of garden art fascinated me and I’ve spent several months thinking about how to decorate my planters. While surfing the Net for ideas, I came upon this and was blown away!

Mario inspired garden art made with Sculpey and chicken wire!

Kalapusa made a Piranha plant, a teething baby Piranha plant, a suspicious carrot and my absolute favorites, some green thumbs! She has also created a video on the making of the Momma Piranha so that you can see the basic steps in her process.

Star Wars Terrarium at Powell’s Books for Cooks and Gardeners

Imagine my happiness when I was buying some books at my favorite Powell’s for Cooks and Gardeners (in SE Portland) on Tuesday, and saw this huge, super amazing Yoda-with-a-leashed-dinosaur terrarium in the shop window! Megan Walsh and her Powell’s co-workers made this Star Wars-meets-Land of the Lost world inside a large antiqued glass box with ferns and lots of other plants. It’s beautiful in person and they will even open the hinged doors so you can see the scene more closely!

I also got word that Megan has been working on a Star Trek: TNG terrarium (starring Captain Jean-Luc Picard, of course) and I’m sure hoping to see that one too… stay tuned.
