Geek-Theme Memo Board
It’s been a while since I shared one of my own projects, so I thought I’d share my most recent geekcraft – a Geek Memo Board.
Using this tutorial for How to Make a French Memo Board, I wrapped an 18×24 canvas with batting and fabric and stapled it to the frame, and added ribbon and buttons. Knowing most of my memorabilia was space-themed, I used this fun fabric from Jo-Ann that had a blue swirly background with little stars.
Once I had the board all assembled (it took maybe an hour), I added my geek fandom references:
- Spock-Han-Mal meme
- Battlestar Galactica propaganda print
- TARDIS a la Starry Night
- Keep Calm and Aim to Misbehave (Firefly reference)
- Fighting Imps (Game of Thrones reference)
- Spock Monkey (the image I have is a greeting card, but there are instructions on how to make one in my Star Trek Crafts book!)
I have this memo board on my desk at work where I can gaze upon its geeky loveliness often. What geeky homages do you have at your desk/cube at work or home office?

Grumpy Cat Strikes Again
Tardar Sauce, aka Grumpy Cat, aka everyone’s favorite internet meme, is back and inspiring more artists this time.
“…The Grumpy Cat Art Project, a multimedia exhibition and auction event in honor of the Internet celebrity cat put together by more than 30 artists-in-residence at the Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment center in Huntsville, Alabama. According to one of the event organizers Dustin Timbrook, the exhibition aims to show the world that “art can elevate even the sillest subject,” taking advantage of the cat’s internet appeal to showcase the talent of resident artists at Lowe Mill. All of their artworks, which range from sculptures and paintings to stained glass art and soap carvings, are scheduled to be auctioned off online between May 27th and May 31st, culminating in a one-night exhibition at the art center on May 31st.”
“Ceramic potter and sculptor Calvin Hubbard’s Grumpy Cat is incredibly expressive and lovable. Don’t you just want to hug him?” This artist and art combo picture really cracked me up this morning. I love how Calvin’s got the Grumpy Cat look on his face.
Why not Zoidberg?
There’s a chill in the air, so why not Zoidberg? What’s not to like about this Doctor Zoidberg Balaclava from Om Nom Nom Studios. It keeps you warm, and it puts strange little dangly squid monsters in front of your mouth. Best yet, it is nearly half of a Halloween costume. All you need is some similar color mittens and a lab coat and you’re ready to stay warm at an outdoor party.
Engraved Glasses
I’ve always loved the look of engraved glasses. Truthfully, I blame it on McDonalds and the glasses that they gave out for a Disney anniversary. I think it’s a really classy way of showing your geeky side, while still remaining functional.
Over at PlacidRain on Etsy, they’ve made this awesome idea and turned into a shop of amazing art. Custom glass fanart, ranging from Moogles and Chocobos to Super Mario to Pokemon, even Totoro. As I scroll through this shop I have a meme in my head shouting “BUY ALL OF THE GLASSES!!!!”
Friday Round-Up: Fish with Feet
So, this week’s Friday Round-Up celebrates one of my heroes, Darwin. The well-known two legged take on the ichthys symbol is used by fans of evolution (can a scientific theory have fans? Does it matter if it does or not? It’s popularity’s kinda irrelevant; it’s still true…). Darwin Fish (Or Tonys, as all good Feeters know) are rough depictions of Ichyostega, the remains of which are important transitional fossils between tetrapods and fish, since they have a tail and gulls akin to fish but amphibian style skull and limbs.
So, I present to you my ten favourite crafts in honour of both Darwin and Tony…
