Make a comics magnet this Saturday!

Hello Portland! If you’re free this Saturday afternoon (August 20 from 2-4), please stop by the Pendleton Woolen Mill Store for a craft party + book signing to celebrate World of Geekcraft (and my other new book, Modern Log Cabin Quilting). There will be free craft kits to make your own POW! ZAP! comics magnet from WOGC (plus wool log cabin quilt block kits), and we’ll have snacks and cupcakes, a tote bag full of crafty prizes to win, and a few other surprises…

Do you have Post-Potter Depression?

I know not everyone is a Harry Potter fan, but boy, I am. I loved HP 7.2, and have the $17.25 (!) IMAX 3D ticket receipt to show for it! I’ve read and re-read all the books over the last ten years and yes, even knitted a teeny-tiny Gryffindor scarf (the one in the picture). To celebrate/commemorate the end of the movie series, Chronicle Books is giving away a copy of my book, World of Geekcraft! They posted some pretty cute ideas for fans who are trying to cope with a post-Harry world. If you comment there adding your own suggestions by 8/11, you can win a copy of the book, and craft your own HP baby or toddler costume to introduce the next generation to the series…

Scrabble Tile Jewelry by Laura Mac

laura_mac_jewelry

Though there are numerous crafters out there upcycling old Scrabble tiles into jewelry, my favorite is Baltimore-based artist Laura MacDougall. She takes Scrabble tile jewelry to the next level, from fun and kitchy to, well, elegant.

Each Scrabble tile pendant showcases one of Laura’s beautiful nature photographs. It’s then strung up with semi-precious stones, making a piece that you’d be proud to wear out to a special event. My favorite is this striking peacock feather necklace.

She’s also been thinking outside the box (if you’ll pardon the pun) and experimenting with round pendants, which lend themselves well to her photography.

If you’re not into jewelry, Laura also makes simple yet lovely book thongs, which are perfect for that beach-blanket read this summer.

Harry Potter Dolls Set

I love everything about this set of hand-painted Harry, Ron and Hermoine dolls by dangercatdolls on Etsy – especially the tiny hand-pained Gryffindor stripes on their ties. You can also request other characters from the books if you have another favorite… very cool!

I also liked the description:

Dolls are made of wood and stand approximately 3.5 inches tall. They are lovingly hand painted and sealed in acrylic. While they are considerably sturdy little fellows (and ladies), they are not toys and should not be given to children, regardless of how much they love 5000 page novels.
