OverReader – Goodreads plus Overdrive and/or Kindle Unlimited

OverReader

Ok, admittedly, not really craft-related, (unless you count coding as a craft?)… but if you use Goodreads and either Overdrive or Kindle Unlimited for ebooks, take a look at OverReader. It can scan the books on your shelf and tell you if they are available at your local Overdrive library or if they are available in Kindle Unlimited.

DIY Snow Globe Necklace

snow globe necklace2

Desiree Campbell, of The 36th Avenue blog, posted this fun little tutorial for when you’re staring to feel a little Christmas-y. It was created by Jen at Eat. Sleep. MAKE. Jen’s made this a super easy tute, and she even gives links where you can order the materials needed, if you can’t find them locally.

However, if you’re not crafty enough (perish the thought!) to make your own Snow Globe Necklace, you can always order one from Brass and Thread.

Greedo the Bounty Hunter Toothbrush Holder

45057DSCN6375

Heather Kostal posted her handmade Greedo toothbrush holder to Craftster way back in 2006. But I’ve just discovered it because I’m on kind of a Greedo kick right now.

Heather made this for her husband a few years before she even posted it. She used to have access to a kiln, so it is just hand-built clay, then kiln fired and glazed. She said they took it out of their bathroom because with arrival of both a dog and a baby, it was getting knocked around. Now that it has resurfaced, she realized they all have electric toothbrushes which can no longer be accommodated by Greedo’s bulbous head.

“Legend of Zelda” Crochet Blanket

N0NTVvK

Holy carp, the detail in this blanket is amazing!! Romelnq recently posted this image to Imgur, saying that after five years, the blanket was finally finished. However, Romelnq was just the poster. Romelnq’s wife was the creator.

The black and blue background was crochet (with an H sized hook) and the rest of it was cross-stitched over. You can see a series of progression shots here. For a size comparison, Romelnq said in an earlier post that the “1991” at the bottom of the blanket is about as big as a banana, so we got our scale after all!

Crocheted Woodland Animals Modeled After Influential Women

C9ArHdc

Alexandria Milford, also known as quirky1crochet on Imgur, posted a series of photos, of crocheted animals that are modeled after influential women throughout history. The photo above is Rosie the Riveter Fox and Frida Kahlo Bunny. Some of her other creations include Rosa Parks Deer, Amelia Earhart Raccoon and Marie Curie Mouse.

If you’re interested in buying any of her animals, you can find her on Etsy.

Or, if you’re interested in attempting your own influencial crocheted animals, it looks like these are fairly small and probably probably made with a lightweight acrylic yarn and a series of single crochets. If you need help getting started, you might want to look at some of these sets to help you get your sizing right: Star Wars Crochet, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer Crochet or Disney Classic Crochet.

The Making of a Mermaid

4WBNWje

ilikeshields posted a series of photographs of a university project she was involved with, back in 2013. (The one picture I’ve posted here doesn’t do the project justice. Trust me, go check out the series!) In it, she spent two days having a full body cast done so she could be turned into a stylized mermaid.

Some of the commenters didn’t like the extra fins the mermaid was given, but I think the finished project is amazing! It’s like they created a new race of mermaids. Humans don’t all look the same. Why should mermaids?
