Tutorial: Needle Felted Solar System Mobile

Needle Felted Solar System

I’ve never actually tried needle felting myself, but this is such a wonderful use of the craft that I am definitely going to give it a go sometime. Check out this Needle Felted Solar System Mobile over on It’s a Knit House.

There’s a set of instructions for making your own Needle Felted Solar System Mobile. Although obviously, it’s not quite to scale. If you made a 2 inch diammeter version of the Earth in a scale model, the Sun would have to be 18 feet across, and you’d need 22 miles to fit the whole thing in, including orbits (or 29 miles if you want to include Pluto).

But for illustrative purposes this is an awesome geeky science craft! I want one.

Walt Disney and Pixar Posters

walt disney and pixar posters

I’ve recently stumbled upon Etsy user Edmund and his shop posterexplosion. He sells minimalistic posters, printed on heavyweight 220g paper featuring, for instance, the Justice League, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and of course, Walt Disney and Pixar. What’s better, the more you buy, the cheaper they get. Worldwide shipping for six posters is just eight dollars. (That’s less than shipping them to the next-door town, here in The Netherlands!)

From this set, my favorite is definitely Wall-E. Aren’t those big puppy eyes simply adorable? You don’t like Disney? Pick six others for 60 or try these slightly manlier Batman posters.

Harry Potter Chess Set

Harry Potter chess set

We are big Harry Potter fans at my house – my husband read every book out loud to us as a family, and of course we saw all the movies. Not only was it fantastic to see the stories played out on the big screen, but it was fun to watch the actors grow older with each new movie. And some surprises there – Neville Longbottom, anyone??

But I digress. Let’s get on with the geek-crafting sharing. I saw this Harry Potter Chess Set with fun matching bag on Mod Podge Rocks recently, and knew you all would want to see it too. Thankfully the original project is shared on Instructables, so you can conjure up your own magically strategic set, too!

Fox Is Cracking Down On Anyone Making And Selling Homemade Firefly Jayne Hats

f108_jaynes_hatAccording to Geek Girl Diva over at Fashionably Geek, “Apparently, fans who have been making and selling their versions of the Jayne hat for roughly the last 10 years are being sent “cease and desist” notices from Fox. It seems Ripple Junction now has an official license to make the Jayne hat (shown at right, the one sold through ThinkGeek for $24.99) and that means independent Browncoats who might be making and selling them are now infringing on the license for a simple patterned hat.” BTW, as of 04/13/13, there were 60 handmade Jayne hats for sale.

The Browncoats of the world did not approve and ThinkGeek took action:

“Browncoats, we hear your concerns about the cease and desist on Etsy Jayne Hat sellers!

“We weren’t involved in that process, but we have reached out to FOX and we’ve heard what you’ve had to say. As a result, we’ve decided to donate the profits from all Jayne Hat sales on our site to Can’t Stop the Serenity, a Browncoat charity dear to ThinkGeek’s heart that raises funds and awareness in support of Equality Now. We’ll continue making that donation until we run out of stock.

“We hope the Hero of Canton himself would approve.”

janye-hatThis was Think Geek’s udpated on 04/11/13: “So, we got Fillioned. Nathan Fillion tweeted a link to our blog post about our Jayne Hat donation to Can’t Stop the Serenity (thank you, Nathan!) and our blog couldn’t handle the traffic, taking the whole site down with it (thank you, Nathan?).”

This Bender Furnace Wants You to Bite His Shiny Metal… You Know

Futurama’s Bender, our booze pounding robot of the future, is ready to keep you warm and potentially cook your meat.

This wood stove called the “Bender Bending Rodriguez” was made by UK’s Rob Halftroll, and it was made of, “”5 gas bottles, 5kg of welding wire, 90 litres of CO2, various bits of steel mostly 1.2mm sheet, plenty of plasters and copious amounts of alcohol this is what I ended up with.”

If you check out Halftroll’s YouTube channel, you can see the Bender oven in action, in all it’s burning glory.
