To cutely go where no one has gone before

When you’ve more or less been in school in some capacity since 1980, as I have been, your final month of coursework — ever– is a really big deal. That is what April 2012 is for me, my final month of classes! Much of that graduate work has been done while working full time and trying to keep a few hobbies around for sanity. Once these classes are over, I’ve got so many pent-up hobby desires to unleash. On the top of that list: amigurumi! And I can’t think of a nicer bunch of characters I want to give yarn-birth to than the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. By the way, clearly the best Star Trek franchise. No two ways about it. Picard>>>>Kirk any day of the week.

So cute, yes? I can’t decide which of these are my favorite but I will admit that I’m glad Wesley Crusher isn’t one of them. I know, I know, Wil Wheaton is an amazing man but the boy genius thing is so played out and it was played out in 1989.

OK, you know what? It’s Data. Data’s lil yellow eyes are getting to me. He’s my favorite.

Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Whimey Jewelry

You’ll have to forgive me for posting about Doctor Who twice in a row, but I was unable to control my excitement when I came across this jewelry.

Anyone who knows me well, knows I really love hand stamped jewelry. Whether it’s hand stamped leather, or hand stamped metal, I think it’s one of the prettiest and simplest pieces of jewelry a girl can own. However, I hadn’t ever searched for hand stamped fandom jewelry. When I clicked search on Etsy at this time, I had no idea I could never go back.

I immediately was drawn to the work done at Chasing at Starlight on Etsy. The fonts for the many different items (I’m a font harlot), along with all the jewelry for my many different fandoms (Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Sherlock), made me completely geek out.

All of them are so beautifully made! They’ve made my list for my next geek jewelry purchase!

D&D Monster Man, and D12 Dice Bag pattern

While clicking around on StumbleUpon, my son recently stumbled upon this little beauty – a wonderfully entertaining 4-1/2 minute video of Brad Knight, the self-proclaimed D&D Monster Man. He does impressions of what he imagines Dungeons & Dragons monsters sound like. I certainly can’t refute him.

D&D Monster Man Brad Knight

While imaginative, his impression talent is not very crafty, so I dug up a D&D-inspired craft to share, complete with tutorial: the d12 Handbag (of Holding) from Evil Mad Scientist Labs.

Perfect for an impromptu RPG session, or a night on the town, this DIY dodecahedron will make you the envy of geeks and fashionistas alike.

Met up at the Hanging Tree

The release of The Hunger Games movie has really stirred up geek creativity! Stenciled shirts, cosplay and now… embroidery! Needlework isn’t just for grandmas any more!

There have been a couple of Hunger Game craft swaps running on Craftster and I have to say that I think that this is one of my favorite pieces created! Check out the textures and colors that Audania1 used in her Hanging Tree hoop!

And here’s a close up of the quote she chose…

This is awesome work Audania1!

Is there a Doctor in the Tardis?

Is there a Doctor in the Tardis?Yes, there is and not just one but eleven Doctors.

Pixelated Mushroom, who describes herself as a “Librarian based in Australia who likes to knit, crochet, juggle and firetwirl (but not all at once)”, has completed crochet patterns for mini versions of all eleven regenerations of Doctor Who as well the Tardis.  She’s compiled them into a wonderful PDF Collection that you can download here.

Let the Games Begin…

Let the Games Begin... And with the opening of the new Hunger Games movie, based on the book, of the same name, they have. I may be one of the few people left who have not read the books yet but I recognize the symbols from it after all the publicity surrounding it.

I also recognize hand crafting talent and these pieces definitely fall in that category. A stenciled shirt and polymer pins bearing the Mockingjay symbol hat people have come to know from this series. The work of Miss K, daughter of PJCrafty, her mother who is very talented as well, the pins and shirt are just a few of the fandom items she has created in the past couple of years.

I do believe, the odds will always be in her favor with this kind of crafty talent.
