Artist’s Risqué Embroidery Is Not Like What Grandma Makes

alien butt

Alaina Varrone, aka SpidersPaw, is an embroidery artist unlike any you’ve seen before. The self-taught Connecticut native has a style all her own, and it’s far more T and A, than flowers and bunny rabbits.

Though her work does feature a lot of big bums and plunging cleavage, it’s more than just provocative. The detail, vivid characters, skillful execution, and acute sense of humor mean Varrone’s pieces do more than titillate. They scintillate.

Born to a self-proclaimed “family of weirdos and storytellers,” Varrone draws much of her inspiration from history’s oddities and eccentric characters, and she uses embroidery as a means to explore that inspiration.

Though some pieces are on the tamer side, featuring girls in bikinis and rear-ends galore, other’s are not quite so PG. Varrone’s creations are, in some cases, incredibly graphic, but due to the artistry involved, they are perhaps less pornographic and more beautiful. It is amazing how much feeling can be expressed with a simple needle and thread.

I really like the idea of this DIY Minecraft torch. It looks super easy to make, not too expensive, and it would look great to have them dotted around the place for a Minecraft themed party, or even just as part of your everyday décor! There are full instructions of how to make your own papercraft torch, as well as a template to print your own. Happy Mining! :)

Edited to add the original source of the pictures here and the design here.

Boldly Going Where No Socks Have Gone Before

Picard socks by Linda Jo Park

Linda Jo Park, of BeadKnitter Patterns, has created some out-of-this-world socks in honor of Captain Picard from Star Trek. You can find her pattern here.

She also suggests that the pattern could be easily adapted to reference other characters:

There’s no reason why a person couldn’t do them in Captain Kirk gold, Spock blue (you get two choices there), or even Deanna Trois lavender. Or perhaps you’d rather have Gorn green.

What color combo would you choose? Let us know in the comments below!

Duct Tape and Cardboard Dinosaurs and Dragons (Oh My!)

dinosaur heads

Veggisaurus on Imgur has been posting photos of his work for an upcoming con: duct tape and cardboard dinosaurs. But recently, he added a new creation: Toothless from “How To Train Your Dragon.”

toothless head

I couldn’t find Veggisaurus on Etsy so I don’t know if he sells these heads, and I even tried that reverse Google image search…no luck on finding out anything more about him. How an artist of that caliber is hiding is beyond me, especially when you consider where he level of work was two years ago.

I guess the closest thing available would be the Dinosaur Corporation: But does your child have the ultimate dinosaur bedroom accessory-a gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex or Velociraptor head wall mount onto keep them safe and sound? Dinosaur Wall Mount Replicas are beautifully detailed, it’s made of high quality resin and mounted securely on a wooden trophy plaque.

Anatomy Etsy Treasury

anatomy

I am a biologist by background, and a nurse by trade. I love studying the human body and learning how it works. It is a wonderful and amazing thing, and what better way to celebrate this than with a lung on a necklace or a brain on your tie? I think these anatomical crafts are very cute (and maybe a little bit creepy?), and they are all lovely ways of celebrating human anatomy.
