Roll for DIY with This Gaming Tabletop

Gaming Tabletop by KristyGD

From video to card to board, we have several gaming favorites at our house. Of the card and board variety, my kids enjoy Magic the Gathering, Munchkin and Settlers of Catan. Which makes me think this DIY gaming tabletop might be a big hit.

Kristy GD at Please Excuse My Craftermath has created a DIY gaming tabletop that is actually an IKEA hack project, sits atop her existing dining room table, and stores away as a decorative accent between gaming sessions. Talk about multi-purpose! Her blog post walks you through her process for creating the functional and portable tabletop.

With which games would you use this tabletop at your house?

Mini Iron Throne

Or maybe this post should be called “Game of Phones.”

Either way, tumblr1 posted this mini iron throne she made for her phone, on Imgur.

There’s not much about it, other than it’s made with Styrofoam, hot glue, a package (or two) of plastic hors d’oeuvres swords, clay and paint. For a photo tute, check out her posting on Imgur.

Dresden Craft: Shield Bracelet

Dresden shield bracelet by Susan Vriens

As an early Father’s Day gift this year, I took my dad to an author Q&A session with Jim Butcher, author of The Dresden Files series of books about Chicago’s first (and only) wizard private investigator. I prepared for the session by listening to a couple of the books (they’re narrated by James Marsters, who plays Spike on the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series), and really enjoyed them.

Butcher has a distinct voice in the books which also really came through at his author event – the Q&A session was very entertaining. About 500 people showed up, and the questions were quite varied. He talked a bit about his own background in martial arts, and how that played into Det. Karrin Murphy practicing aikido in the books. He also talked about his writing process, how he uses strong outlines, and never feels like he backs Dresden into irretrievable corners, because that’s the opportunity to do something really creative and interesting. Based on the three books I’ve listened to, I’d say he’s succeeded at that!

I saw only a couple of cosplayers at the author event – one woman (not sure who she was dressed as – it wasn’t Det. Murphy) and one pretty spot-on Dresden. If you’re looking to cosplay as Dresden, you might be interested in this shield bracelet project (pictured above) by SilverMoon Dragon. I love the layered look with the cloth strips, chain and coins. She also made an awesome crochet “Bob” from the Dresden Files – be sure to check out her other Dresden crafts on her blog.

Have you read the Dresden books? They’d make a great addition to your geeky to-read list!

The Biggest Geek Craft…Of All Time!

Wow, I thought I was going to go all Kanye West for a second…“Yo ‘Geeks Are Sexy,’ I’m really happy for you…I’ll let you finish. But Chris Lee has one of the biggest Greek Crafts of all time! One of the biggest crafts of all time! I’m sorry.”

Chris Lee, known as the Disco Trooper, and his friends are on a quest to build the ultimate Star Wars prop: a 1:1 scale ESB/ANH hybrid Millennium Falcon with complete, correctly scaled interior. According to their site, Full Scale Falcon, they used the DK Ultimate Collection blueprints as a guide and calculated the final outer dimensions of the structure.

Length: 114 feet
Beam (docking ring to docking ring): 81.5 feet
Height to top of body (not counting quad-laser turret): 24.9 feet
Height to top of dish: 30.9 feet
Clearance: ground to landing gear bay level: 7.8 feet
Clearance: ground to outside bottom of cockpit tube: 13 feet

The actual construction started in 2013. If you go through the blog, there are a ton of photos as the work is being done. The latest work is the cock pit button panels.

“I Am Groot” T-Shirt

HeyThatsSuper is a t-shirt shop on Etsy in Montgomery, AL, and they’ve got the t-shirt we are all going to need this summer: “Hello, I Am Groot.”

HeyThatsSuper’s t-shirts are 4.2 oz., 100% ring spun cotton, and printed with eco-friendly water-based ink, making them super soft, inside and out. Personally, I love the idea of this shirt, but I think it would be better in a lighter color, something a little more “Groot”-like.

Guardians of the Galaxy starts Friday, August 1.
