Cross-stitching smileys; inspiring minds

About one million years ago I cross-stitched a whole bunch of forum smileys/emoticons and attached them to note cards for a massive Internet forum-based snail mail exchange. At the time I was pretty sure that what I was doing was ridiculous, but I was having fun, and these were only people on the Internet anyway, so who cared, right?!

Cross Stitch Emoticons

Today I received the nicest letter from one of the recipients that I’ve actually kept in touch with after all these years. In it, he explained that crafting had never occurred to him before he received my card, but that he loved it so much he tried out cross-stitch for himself (he actually sent me his first attempt – a Half-Life lambda icon), and that led to him trying out other crafts and projects from knitting, to papercraft, to electronics, and beyond!

So really what I wanted to share with you today was the thought that even though I was sure my little cross-stitch pixel-art cards were daft, they actually inspired someone out there to explore their own creativity, and that is AWESOME.

So keep crafting, folks – inspire away! And you know, looking back I reckon those emoticon cards were actually a pretty cool idea. If I do say so myself :)

Lamborghini Aventador A-E2: The Ultimate Papercraft Supercar

Taras Lesko of Visual Spicer, posted a YouTube video of his latest creation: an 8ft (244cm) long Lamborghini Aventador A-E2 papercraft model. His Lambo was completed earlier this year.

“The idea was to build a near-life-size replica of my Aventador Interceptor model, but small enough that I could get it out of my house. After proposing the idea to my wife, she dared me to it and the challenge was on!”

The Perfect Dessert For Any Halloween Party

You know what it’s like…you get an invitation to a Halloween party and are asked, “Can you bring a dessert?” But what to bring? Your best option might be to bring a tried and true recipe: Chilled Monkey Brains, from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but in cake form.

Love that little underbite!

Bubbleandsweet posted a tutorial over at Instructables on how to put together this great Indian delicacy.

May the Force of Origami Be With You

Origami is one of those things that always seemed like magic to me when I first learned it. A few folds here and there and poof! A piece of paper had turned into a swan, or butterfly. So in true Geek Crafts fashion, I’ve found two ways to turn origami geeky! The first is the most iconic ship of the Star Wars universe – the Millennium Falcon.

Courtesy of Wired Magazine, Yourdailyfix.net has posted an illustrated tutorial on how to fold your own version of Han’s beloved ship.

“She may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts.”

“You came in that thing? You’re braver than I thought!”

And, in case you’d like to make Luke’s ship to accompany Han, Xenobia has posted instructions to make an origami X-Wing over at Instructables.com. Just try not to get it stuck in any swamps.

A few pieces of paper, a bit of time, and you can make your own Rebellion fleet! And remember, “Do, or do not. There is no try.”

Star Trek Craft Book

Boldly going where no craft book has gone before! Written by Geek Crafts very own Angie Pedersen, this is an awesome blend of Trek and craft. While primarily a project book it’s also filled with Trek trivia and photos, making it a perfect addition to any Trekkie’s – or Trekker’s – collection. Trekkers and makers, together at last!

Star Trek Craft Book

The projects are inspired by every version of Star Trek, from TOS to comic books, with a variety of different craft techniques and skill levels. It was really hard to decide on the first project to try, but I finally decided on the adorable Kahn finger puppet. He was super easy to make, thanks to the close-up photos of each step of the project. The only thing I did differently was the material for his uber-sexy Kahn hair. I had to substitute novelty yarn for the marabou trim that was called for, only because my local craft store didn’t have it. Unfortunately, I think the effect is more “who stole my conditioner” than “from Hell’s heart I stabbeth thee”. I still think he’s awesome though!

KAAAHHNNNN!!!
