Oh Captain, my Captain

Semel posted a quilt she made, over at Crafster. “Made for a couple of very special trekkies for their wedding. It is queen sized, made with about 4500 2″ squares. I started it in April and just finished it Friday – in time for the wedding rehearsal!”

Patrick Stewart’s portrait graces the front of this quilt while the Star Fleet insignia is on the back, making this a reversible quilt.

Fun fact…Semel also made the Big Bang Theory/Sheldon quilt.

How To: Chainmail From Soda Tabs

If you’re looking for an easy way to make a medieval/fantasy/knight costume, look no further! Continuing in the Hobbit costume theme, one of the most interesting crafts I’ve ever done came from a tutorial I saw on Pinterest where instructables.com user quixotiCfluX demonstrated how to use soda tabs to form chainmail. I then used it as part of my husband’s dwarf costume, and it looked amazing!

Chainmail from Soda Tabs

I asked all of my friends to donate their soda tabs to the cause, and my husband was quite happy to increase his intake of Diet Coke. Using only a wire cutter to cut the top, and a staple remover to help me bend the tabs, which helps them fit together nicely, I managed to create some great looking armor for really cheap! The full tutorial and details are on my blog post, so go have fun! Remember, only 48 days until Halloween!

How-To: Kerbal Space Program Costumes

Halloween is but 44 days away, meaning you only have 7 weekends left to finish your costume. Haven’t even thought of an idea yet? Well, allow me to suggest Kerbals from The Kerbal Space Program!

Kerbal Space Program Custome

Reddit user awallick has posted a great How-To for these Kerbal costumes that he and his friends created for Dragon Con this year, showing the ingenious process which includes paper macheing over gym balls to create the monstrous space helmets. Click here to see how the KSP costumes were created.

Looking forward to more great costume ideas in the run up to Halloween. Have one of your own? Let us know in the comments below.

Miniature Lord of the Rings Bag End

Miniature Bag End from Lord of the Rings

Thanks to Pinterest, I recently stumbled across the most incredibly detailed miniature Bag End from Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Maddie Chambers-Brindley made it for some college coursework on “the importance of play.” She drew upon her experience making Warhammer miniature scenery and models to create the Bag End model.

Interior of Bag End from Lord of the Rings

Check out the level of detail – the top of the “hill” comes off to reveal the interior, and inside there’s a fire in the fireplace, a miniature area rug, hand-tiled floors, portraits of Belladonna Took and Bungo Baggins, the Baggins family tree, and a wee vegetable garden outside.

In this post Maddie talks about her creative process.

Have you ever worked with miniatures? What fantastical world would you like to take on to recreate in mini-form?

An Instrument Fit For a Doctor

For details on this custom Doctor Who ukulele, please sit down first. I want to get the hard part done…the cost.

Are you ready?

tardis-ukulele-1Okay, here we go…it’s $700. I know we are talking about some beautiful work here from someone experienced in making custom ukuleles, but that $700 figure puts it a little out of my price range. (And no, I don’t play the ukulele, but if I had a TARDIS one, I’d learn how to jam on that bad boy!)

tardis-ukulele-2The tone and volume of ukuleles varies with its size and construction. They commonly come in four sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. The TARDIS ukulele is made from the following:
Fret board:– ipa
Bridge/ tailpiece :—— ipa
Body:——– maple
Neck:——– maple

Celentano Woodworks works out of North Carolina and also makes wall hangers for the ukuleles as well.

DIY: Doctor Who Heels

doodlecraft_doctorwhoshoes

When running away across time and space, with a madman with a box, one needs the proper foot wear. Wen waiting for said madman with a box to run away with, one needs the proper footwear. Over at Doodle Craft there are detailed instructions on how to create your very own pair of Doctor Who shoes. You can decide for which scenario they are for.  I’d go with both, and work up a pair of ballet flats. A girl has to be ready to RUN!
