Plants vs. Zombies vs. Santa

I wish I had a tutorial to offer you, but I don’t. Here’s the (awesome) scoop anyway: This dude, Sean, has an apparently crafty and fabulous mother. He told her that he and his girlfriend were into Plants vs. Zombies shortly before Christmas. She made them these delightful stockings. He shared the story on Reddit, and it was subsequently tweeted by PopCap’s Director of Editorial and Social Media, Jeff Green. Who thought they were socks, before being corrected by much of the twitterverse. And now I share it with you. Enjoy.

Steampunk Portal Gun

steampunk portal gun

Today I would like to show you this amazing steampunk portal gun made by ~batman-n-bananas from deviantart. This is what she had to say:

“I absolutely love building things, especially with found objects or bits of scrap nobody loves anymore. The idea for a Steampunk version came from this as I much prefer rusty cogs to pristine white anyday. A lot of people have asked what this is made from… as far as I can remember the ingredients are:

  • 2 antique clock movements
  • 1 +1/2 hangers
  • Metal teapot stand
  • plastic mechano
  • plumbing parts
  • 1 plant pot
  • 1 hair gel pot + various lids
  • plastic tub (those ones you get nuts in the the supermarket)
  • plastic tubing
  • lots and lots of nuts and bolts
  • miniature storage box (for the battery compartment)
  • pocket laser disc (you can get them on ebay if anyone’s interested)
  • 3 lightbulbs
  • cardboard tube
  • metal covering from an old hairbrush
  • AV socket
  • tons of odds and ends from my parents garage
  • oh and of course the usuals – milliput, humbrol and warhammer paints, hot melt glue and about 6 gallons of superglue

that’s about as much as I can remember… enjoy!”

To cutely go where no one has gone before

When you’ve more or less been in school in some capacity since 1980, as I have been, your final month of coursework — ever– is a really big deal. That is what April 2012 is for me, my final month of classes! Much of that graduate work has been done while working full time and trying to keep a few hobbies around for sanity. Once these classes are over, I’ve got so many pent-up hobby desires to unleash. On the top of that list: amigurumi! And I can’t think of a nicer bunch of characters I want to give yarn-birth to than the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. By the way, clearly the best Star Trek franchise. No two ways about it. Picard>>>>Kirk any day of the week.

So cute, yes? I can’t decide which of these are my favorite but I will admit that I’m glad Wesley Crusher isn’t one of them. I know, I know, Wil Wheaton is an amazing man but the boy genius thing is so played out and it was played out in 1989.

OK, you know what? It’s Data. Data’s lil yellow eyes are getting to me. He’s my favorite.

Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Whimey Jewelry

You’ll have to forgive me for posting about Doctor Who twice in a row, but I was unable to control my excitement when I came across this jewelry.

Anyone who knows me well, knows I really love hand stamped jewelry. Whether it’s hand stamped leather, or hand stamped metal, I think it’s one of the prettiest and simplest pieces of jewelry a girl can own. However, I hadn’t ever searched for hand stamped fandom jewelry. When I clicked search on Etsy at this time, I had no idea I could never go back.

I immediately was drawn to the work done at Chasing at Starlight on Etsy. The fonts for the many different items (I’m a font harlot), along with all the jewelry for my many different fandoms (Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Sherlock), made me completely geek out.

All of them are so beautifully made! They’ve made my list for my next geek jewelry purchase!
