A Bracelet DIY Using Old Comics

ComicBookUpCycleBracelet

I have a friend who creates awesome jewelry by recycling old comics, which got me thinking . . . what else can a person make with old comics? That’s how I found this tutorial on Oh! Rubbish! Blog. It’s a super easy DIY, with great pictures.  Plus, I’d bet magazines, newspapers, and old photos would probably work well with this idea too.  Just think of the possibilities!

The cute is strong with this lovey

Crochet Yoda lovey by Kristen McCrory

Need a super cute gift for a youngling in your life? Look no further than this adorable crochet Yoda-inspired lovey by Kristen McCrory.

The little Yoda head gives your young padawan something to cuddle onto, while also toting around the ever-so-comforting blankie, all in Star Wars geek style. Win-win-win.

Make this Yoda blankie even more geek-tastic by watching “Star Wars” while stitching it up, so the Force is melded into every stitch. Which episode of the series would you watch while making this?

Side note: I noticed Kristen also has a mega-awesome Gir lovey in her Etsy shop – makes me think, “Aw, somebody needs a hug!”

Star Wars Pallet Coffee Table

table

Holy recycling projects! This is something we all could do (and even, Heaven forbid, swap out the insignia with any other kind of geek tribal marking you’d like!): a Star Wars pallet coffee table!

OcelotNikon posted this on imgur recently. He took a nicely beat up looking wood pallet, deconstructed it, put it back together in tabletop form, sanded it, and started being all geeky with his craft. He actually made a makeshift project to trace the Jedi symbol he found onto the table top. As OcelotNikon put it, his drawing skills are limited to ninja stick figures. The idea for it came from this video.

That symbol looks like black paint, but he actually burned it into the wood, going through two wood burners from Michael’s. (But unless it’s a candle or my fire pit, I don’t play with fire. A good black paint would probably work here too.) But that wasn’t enough, so he got out the good ole trusty BLOW TORCH and seared the top of the table as well (Yeah, that’s pretty badass right there!). To project the tabletop, OcelotNikon finished with a light colored stain and a satin finish. It took about 12 hours and $100 for this project but it looks like it took about 12 parsecs and a million dollars!

Magic Mirror on the Wall

I have one of those long, dark hallways in my house that’s terribly difficult to decorate.  There’s just one tiny window on one end, so I’m always looking for ways to lighten it up.  This evening I tried putting up three mirrors of different sizes…and it looks excellent!  Clearly, if three mirrors looks excellent, five mirrors would look even better (and ten would look incredible)!  I can see this quickly becoming a new obsession…

Have you seen this lovely LEGO mirror spotted on OurNerdHome?  It’s singularly simple to make (and will be featured prominently in my new mirror hallway by the end of this weekend):

I particularly love the gold spray paint – something we go through a lot of at our house.  Have you ever wondered which gold spray paint to use for your projects? Julia at ChrisLovesJulia experimented with several different kinds, and writes about her findings here.

What are your favorite mirror projects?  I’d love to see!

Cosplay Fun at Planet Comicon 2015!

IBOT

I spent the past weekend at Planet Comicon in Kansas City, and even though I spent the weekend working my booth (The Costume Wrangler’s Closet), I did get to see some pretty awesome cosplay.  Above are some of the amazing folks from the Iron Brothers of Topeka (IBOTS).

RainbowDalek

This little Rainbow Dalek exterminates with cuteness according to her mom!

Sharknado

I had to run this boy down to get his picture for a friend who’s obsessed with Sharknado.  I particularly love the faux gore on all the sharks.  How creative is this kid?!

Groot

I snuck a snapshot of this cosplayed in a seriously cool Groot costume.

R2-Q5

Technically this isn’t cosplay, but the Kansas City R2 Builders Club have got some pretty amazing R2s, like this R2-Q5, an evil R2 whose allegiance belonged to the Empire!

She-Ra

This chainmaille She-Ra was a volunteer from Amanda Lynn Chainmaille Creations.
