Finding Fellow Female Geek Bloggers

Female Geek Bloggers badge

Have you played around with Google+ yet? I’m not as active on there as I am on other networks, but I am a member of a few Communities. Communities are similar to Facebook Groups or website forums, where like-minded people gather to share resources and chat about whatever they’re interested in. One G+ Community I particularly enjoy is Female Geek Bloggers, moderated by Bree Brouer and The Nerdy Girlie.

With 300+ members, there are a wide variety topics discussed, including Doctor Who, cosplay, comics, movies, anime, gaming (both video and board), and even “geek therapy.” I really enjoy the breadth of discussions, and have been exposed to topics and people I wouldn’t have otherwise stumbled upon. I also love the sense of community there – all of us interested in geeky things, supporting blogging and sometimes marketing efforts of other geeky females.

Quite a few of the members are also crafters, so I get to see plenty of interesting geekcrafts. A few projects that have been shared in the Community:

Nice Knockers! Labyrinth cosplay

Talking Knockers Labyrinth cosplay by Brittney Benjamin

You gotta hand it to a girl with a nice pair of knockers. Indeed, Brittney Benjamin crafted hers herself, based on the talking door knockers in the movie Labyrinth. Working with two pounds of Sculpey and an old bra, she created some rather eye-catching cosplay. (Though it’s rude to stare.)

I remember watching Labyrinth in my youth, and vaguely remember being pretty scared by it. I should probably watch it again to see why. Probably just the sight of David Bowie in those pants.

Alice in Wonderland Custom Shoes

BecciBoosCustomShoes of Manchester, England has some super cute, super girly Alice in Wonderland themed shoes in her Etsy shop.

The shoes come in a 4.5″ heel with a 1″ platform peep toe with a cream and pink background and blue satin bow. Aside from the fabric, BecciBook hand places over 1,000 crystals on the heels, front and back of the shoe. Then, she finishes them with a blue bow, diamante brooch and mini key. She also paints the underside of the shoes to the customer’s preference.

I Am Groot’s Jewelry

Jewelry artist Danica Asurdzic has created a really lovely doublesided pendant of Groot.

groot

The pendant is made of copper wire and gemstones. She used blue sheen labradorite for his eyes. When it’s flipped over to the flying rocket side inspired by the ship’s colors (blue, orange and white), she used clear quartz points, orange carnelian from Botswana, blue obsidian, and tiny white opal behind it . She also included a “tunnel” for the chain in the middle, so it can be flipped and worn both sides without taking it off.

DIY: Guardians of the Galaxy Dress

Have you seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet? You should do that. Or maybe go see it again and this time do it in your own homemade galaxy dress.  Over at Seditious Joy MaggietheCrafter has put together a tutorial on how to change a black dress into a galaxy you can defend.  I’d say she did an awesome job.  Don’t you think?

Look at that dress, now back to your dress. Don’t you want one of your very own? I mean I have plain black dresses to spare. All you need is some bleach, dye, and patience.

Full instructions can be found at Seditious Joy with an amusing photo tutorial. I’m an easy mark for puns so I greatly enjoy “Stark Contrast.”
