A Great Fanservice

As someone who enjoys finding small and seemingly insignificant ways to show my fangirlness, when I stumbled across the Etsy store Fanservice Nails, I may have thought I caught a glimpse of heaven.

Though my personal favorite has since been sold out, the rest of her hand-blended nail polishes do not disappoint. Taking inspiration from a few of the best tv shows, ranging from Battlestar Galatica to Torchwood to Dollhouse, Fanservice Nails is just that. A service for fans.

Dazzling DNA

I think we can all agree that science is a spectacular, wondrous thing. It’s also now a stylish thing, too, when you wear a pair of these DNA earrings. My personal favorites are the rainbow DNA earrings—which could do double-duty as science pride and gay pride, if you’re so inclined. Or they can just be awesome rainbow DNA earrings. That’s cool, too.

Is that a Dalek dress?

Why yes, yes it is. Color me impressed. So impressed, in fact, that I’ll admit that Daleks kind of turned me off of Dr. Who at first. In fact, I first met them during a sewing project.

I was working on something challenging and the show was playing in the background.  My sewing project hit a frustrating snag and all I  heard in the background was that horrible >>EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE<< and I.just. got. stressed. out.

The way my story ended was with a poorly hemmed pair of fuzzy pig print pajama pants and a moratorium on Dr. Who in my house (or at least in my presence). I do not have the skill and tenacity of somevelvetmorning, who produced with sewing poetry (also known as sewitry).

She shares the step-by-step instructions with us to attempt to replicate her awesomeness.:

To Boldly Crochet a Starfleet Insignia

Star Trek crochet Starfleet insignia

I was so excited to find this tutorial for a crochet Starfleet insignia – I’ve been wanting to make a cozy for my husband’s Kindle Fire, and now I can attach this insignia to it. I suppose I’ll make the cozy either blue or gold, because we all know what happens to anything covered in red…

I can also think of all sorts of other ways to use a Star Trek symbol – Christmas ornaments, afghans, hair clippies, binky holders, backpack embellishments… What would you like to adorn with a bit of Starfleet bling?

I Am Polymethyl Methacrylate

Mooching around Covent Garden between shows on my last matinee day, I came across these gorgeous necklaces and brooches made by Brendan & Ruth from I Am Acrylic. The pair of them design and make all the awesome designs you see here, as well as other jewellery inspired by ‘space and sky and nature and things.’ I really love the simplicity of the icons, and the bold use of colour – the necklaces would look great worn layered together.

Every piece is individually cut on a fretsaw, from acrylic or wood, then hand finished in their Spitalfields workshop. They sell in a number of stores through out the UK, or online at their site and etsy shop.
