Lightsaber Hilts from Utah

il_570xN.646226091_4esf

Last week, I ordered a lightsaber hilt from Salt Lake Saber Company on Etsy.

For cosplay and display, these hilts do not have blades or electronics, but they are made out of steel, vinyl and plastic, and come in either a chrome or satin nickel finish. These hilts can be made to order with custom specifications for only $30 each, but Blaire Maynes also sells pre-made hilts (which is what I ordered), which are only $25 each. Blaire sells high quality (and heavy) lightsaber hilts. Blaire even has a couple of blasters available.

There are other companies that sell all the parts needed to make a hilt, either with or without electronics (but you still have to put them together yourself), or you can go online to get a tutorial on how to get all the parts locally and make your own hilt. I tried making my own hilt earlier this year, and it was not a pretty finished sight!

If you have a future Jedi Knight on your Christmas list and you can’t find the right gift for him/her, check out Salt Lake Saber Company’s Etsy shop. You won’t be disappointed. Blaire’s lightsaber hilts look movie set quality.

Looking for a holiday gift for a four-legged bestie? Be s/he worthy, perhaps Meowlnir is just what you need.

The cool cats over at With Our Powers Combined have put together a tutorial on how to make feline-friendly replica of Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer. It’s so cute, it would make a great stocking stuffer for the less furry on your holiday list as well!

Mom Draws Geektastic Pop Culture Artwork on Her Children’s Lunch Bags Every Day

lunch7

Each day, Christy Kilgore of eastern Illinois likes to bring a little sunlight in her children’s life by drawing pop culture artwork on the lunch bags they bring to school. She’s been doing this for about a year now and uses regular colored pencils, sharpies, and crayola markers to create her art. Be sure to check out the original posting, check her out on Instagram (linked above from her name), or follow her on Twitter to see more of her work.

I’m jealous…I need someone to pack a lunch for me everyday and draw on my lunch bags!

Gift A Geek: Geeky Ornaments

The Holidays are coming! The Holidays!  Currently its early enough that you can still make something, or get gifts to decorate for the holidays. So we are going to start with geeky ornaments. Hallmark is surprisingly good at this, but we have so many options, from making to buying. And its not too late to start making!

For the Geek Crafter/Soon to Be Crafter

For the Geek Shopper

Geeky_treasury

I’ve put together a treasury list of a variety of geeky ornaments one can find from a variety of sellers on Etsy. They are  a mix of shapes, styles, and fandoms and nearly all the shops cover more than the fandom pictured. So I would say give it a click through and enjoy.

Katniss Everdeen Cowl Wrap

cowl

My_RubySlippers of Aurora, IL posted her version of Katniss Everdeen’s cowl wrap over at Craftster.

She used a #6 super bulky yarn from Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in #123 Oatmeal The S/M size took just under three skeins, and she only spent about $12-15 total on it. An added bonus for My_RubySlippers: she is also an archer and the design works well and stays put while staying out of the way, while out shooting some arrows.

She has her pattern available for sale in her Etsy shop, Orange September, for anyone that’s interested. This fun and trendy cowl is seamless and reversible. The armhole can be left or right, and cowl can be worn over a shirt, sweater, or jacket. Instructions given for two size ranges, S/M (formerly One-Size Fits Most) and L/XL. It will also stretch to fit a range of sizes when crocheted with recommended yarn and hook size, and matching the gauge.

Scrap Metal Art

alien

Recycling gives you a good feeling that you’ve done your part in reducing the waste and somehow helped your community and the environment. But there’s a new trend going on now around this: scrap metal art. Life size statues of Autobots, Predator and even Darth Vader have appeared out of nowhere around the world, all made out of scrap metal.

A few years ago, an Optimus Prime scrap metal art statue statue popped out of nowhere in Dream Green Park in Beijing and it instantly attracted the gazes of many passers-by. The leader of the Autobots is made entirely made out of waste materials. And that’s probably the best way to show that just because something is made from junk, doesn’t mean it’s junk.

Here and here are just a few scrap metal art statues found on the internet, including Predator, Darth Vader, Iron Man and Ghost Rider! My personalfavorite is the alien statue at the beginning of this post. For some reason, I look at it and I can’t help but think H.R. Giger would approve.
