Tutorial: Geeky Photography with Flash Stencils

Help! My house is being Space Invaded!

Lounge Space Invaders

Alright it isn’t – it’s just clever camera trickery in the form of flash stencilling. But it’s a pretty neat effect and a lot of fun, so I thought I’d share with you how it can be done.

You will need:

  • A camera capable of taking long exposures (30 seconds is about right)
  • A tripod or stable surface
  • An external flash (or a very bright torch)
  • A box
  • Card
  • Craft knife and cutting tools
  • Black tape
  • White paper

Star Wars Crochet Ships: Amigurumi Patterns

I’m mystified by people who can crochet good amigurumis, doubly mystified by those who can compose their own patterns (what are you, a wizard or something) and triply impressed by those who then have the patience to record and write those patterns down.  So what I’ve got for you today is just all POWPOWPOW.

MysteriousCats sells various amigurumi patterns via their Etsy shop so that if you are the sort of person who prefers to spend time on that first POW, M’Cats has you covered on the later two. Star Wars Patterns

The Cutest Dalek Ever

Dalek-Jumper

Allison Bitter has a free knit pattern over at Ravelry for your baby: a Dalek jumper! (You may need to create a user name and password in order to download the pattern.)

“You don’t have to wait for the baby in your life to grow up to put him or her in a Dalek jumper! …you can choose which two colors you’d like to make it. It uses around 215-250 yards of yarn and will probably keep you busy for a while – just long enough to figure out how to avoid extermination.”

And once your baby becomes the scourge of the universe, this little jumper would go well with the Dalek onesie, featured here on Geek Crafts a little over two years ago by Rossie.

Allison actually uploaded her pattern to Ravelry in November 2011. For more of Allison’s patterns, check out her blog, A Bitter Knitter.

Amazingly Detailed Star Wars Cross Stitch

Check. This. Out:

Star Wars Cross Stitch

This is an impressive piece of work. I’m always amazed by the time and care taken over large projects –  probably because I have only the patience to stitch emoticons and Space Invaders. This amazingly detailed work depicting Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker really shows that hard work pays off.

Check out the original post on Tumblr. The creater of this piece made the pattern themselves using www.picturecraftwork.com, uploading an image they found online. I’d love to know how many differrent colours of thread were needed!

Knit Alien Facehugger

Knit Alien Facehugger

For Christmas I got my husband the Alien Anthology on Blu-Ray, plus “Prometheus“, so we have recently reacquainted ourselves with the classic films. I tell you, there are still some spots in those movies that make me jump! Like when the Alien Facehugger pops out in the sick bay, particularly!

So when I saw this Alien Facehugger knitting project on Craftster, I had a moment of heebie-jeebie. She did a great job on it! And extra points for providing a pattern so others could join in on the creepy-crawly knitting fun.
