Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead Plush

If you’re a fan of “The Walking Dead,” you can have your favorite character but you can’t deny the popularity of Daryl Dixon, as portrayed by Norman Reedus. And that popularity just continues to grow, especially with SpeakGeekandEnter from Craftster making a plushie of our favorite little archer.

My Little Pony: Dr. Whooves

Craftster user dfabbric made a cute MLP as the pony-fication (is that even a word?) of Tom Baker, the fourth actor to portray the Doctor.

“I’m really happy with how he turned out, though he looks a little angry. The pattern is by Valleyviolet. I hand knit his scarf and it’s removable.” dfabbric also has a blog, where she’s known as Diane, out of Alberta, Calgary.

Friday Round-Up: Give ’em STEAM

Some of you may have heard of the acronym STEM: Science Technology, Engineering and Math. A respectable, geeky term in it’s own right, but probably a little stuffy for us over here at GeekCraft.

Recently, however, there has been a lot of talk about STEAM, which takes the stuffiness of STEM and adds an “A” for arts, injecting all sorts of coolness and excitement. In all seriousness, advocates of STEAM argue that arts provide school-aged children with a lot of skills valued in the world like design, problem solving, creativity, stick-to-it-ivness, etc., It is in that spirit of STEAM that I wanted to take this Friday round-up to focus on activities that you can do with young people in your life that promote this important intersection of art, science, engineering, and craft:

First up, just in time for those of you celebrating Easter, we’ve got egg geodes from Tinkerlabs. It’s some good chemistry (my favorite) and can lead to a nice conversation about geology. AND..and…it is colorful and fun.

Monday Afternoon Quickie: Come On, Grab Your Friends!

Salutations, geekcrafters! Time for your weekly Monday Afternoon Quickie with Caitie. Sound like a blast? Great!

So, this week we are getting down with some Adventure Time! So go on, grab your friends & a sewing machine and check out ohnorachio‘s adorable stuffed animal/pillow DIY. These are so super cute, and super simple!
All you need is a printer, mild tracing skills, fabric paint, a sewing machine (or your hands. you can do it! get old school!), and something to stuff them with. Algebraic!

Enderman Soft Toy

Do you speak German? Of course you do, otherwise why would you be here? This adorable Enderman sewing pattern comes from bleeptrack.de, a ridiculously awesome site devoted to “geeks, games und der ganze rest”. I could have used Google translate to figure out what is going on with this pattern, but there is a handy video included that saves me the trouble of using my fancy book learning to figure out words.

I am a bit of a Minecraft fanatic, so when I saw this pattern I knew I had to share it no matter what language it was written in.

Friday Round-up: Rubik’s Cube Madness!

I am a collector of hobbies and lately I have gotten back into the Rubik’s Cube. The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by a Hungarian sculptor and professor named Erno Rubik. He was awesome. He didn’t even realize he had made a puzzle until the first time he scrambled it and tried to get it back together. It took him like 6 months, now the world record is 5.66 seconds. My best time is somewhere just shy of 2 minutes, but I am getting better. Enough about me, you are here for crafts so here we go!

This Rubik’s Cube tissue box by HandyHomeGrown on Etsy is made out of wood, making it far superior to a lot of the other Rubik’s Cube tissue boxes you can find out there because it probably smells pretty rustic.
