Make your own robot. (or as least decorate your own)

Who doesn’t want their own personal robot? Well check out this cute little guy, Wendell.

I love that he comes as a blank slate, so you can decorate him any way you want. He’s also open source, so you can program him to do your bidding.

And check him out dressed as Michael Jackson doing the thriller dance.

Tutorial Tuesday: Angry Birds Pig Plushie

crafters love angry birds… FACT

Craftster user Miss Jols shares with us a tutorial on how to make the bad guy we love to hate (but secretly love to love, and would love to squoosh!) out of green fleece!

Don’t pretend you wouldn’t make 6 of them, pile them up in the corner and throw stuff at them until you’d knocked them all over…  no? … just me then …

Crochet Lego Baby Blanket

As I recently finished up a knitting project – a Harry Potter Gryffindor scarf for a friend – I was surfing around looking for my next project. The Internets did not disappoint.

Andrea Baker of All Things Bright & Beautiful recently posted this awesome crochet Lego baby blanket that looks so do-able. I immediately pinned it to my “G33k” Pinterest board.

The bobble stitch is fairly common on afghans, but I love how it mimics a Lego for a subtly geeky look.  Plus, this “set” of Legos would be so much more pleasant to step on in the dark.

Normally I tend to stay away from motif afghan projects because I find stitching all the pieces together to be a tedious chore. But I might be willing to overlook that for this project. In her blog post, Andrea mentions that she plans to write up the pattern she created and share it! I’ll be watching for that one! I wonder if my son might be interested in displaying this on his college dorm bed?

Why not use this opportunity to encourage a new generation of girls to be adventurous, independent and downright awesome by making the geekettes of your family this great Dora the Exporer backpack. Julie from Vibrant Designs shares the tutorial on her blog…. I’m tempted to scale it up… it’d be the best daiper/changing bag EVER, am I right?

Nothing Says “Happy Holidays” Like Yoda!

I was playing around the web this week and came upon a really fantastic origami Yoda. And I thought “I will share this with my Geek Crafts peeps!” But finding the pattern [PDF] was tricky. I eventually succeeded, though you’ll notice the (very few) written directions are in Spanish. The translations are pretty easy to guess, but if you want to be very sure, Google Translate is more than up to the task.

I think he’d look splendid on a Christmas tree (or on/alongside any other holiday accoutrements that might be part of your celebrations)!

This isn’t the end of my story, though. Because I do my internet browsingwork on a shockingly-crashy Mac, and I lost both of the browser windows I had open in order to remember this fun little Yoda. So I tried to retrace my digital steps in, admittedly, a rather lackadaisical way. I ended up finding a totally adorable “baby Yoda” ornament pattern from Etsy seller Woolly Boully, as well as a book about an origami Yoda (or really about life as a sixth grader). I seriously need to learn to crochet, because I need this ornament on my tree! Not want. Need.
