Crochet Wakko Amigurumi

Wakko amigurumi doll

Back in the day we used to be big fans of the TV cartoon show “The Animaniacs.” They were just so wacky and the dialogue was so clever, we were always giggling, if not outright guffawing, even as adults.

So imagine my joy at finding a Wakko amigurumi doll on Craftster by BunnieBard, complete with pattern. I think my husband would love to have one of these for his office.

What about you? Did you watch Animaniacs when it was on (back in 1993-1998)? Which character was your favorite?

Cosplay, The Geek Way

We’ve got a cosplay double-header for you today. First up, JINKIES! She can’t find her glasses!

h455F7366

Let me say, that as a fellow glasses wearer, if Velma’s eyes are THIS bad, what was Fred and Daphne thinking, having Velma be a part of Mystery, Inc.??? (They should have left her at the haunted carnival!) Cyclops goes by the name of Humble Shield on Facebook, but I wasn’t able to track down who Velma is in real life.

Next up, do you know what Rule 63? “Rule 63 is a rule of the internet that reads as follows: “For any given male character, there is a female version of that character.” This rule’s exceptions are only in the instance that A: the male character is already so androgynous that a female version would be basically the same, or B: the female version hasn’t been drawn yet.”

Hang onto your lightening bolts…for the male version of STORM, god of the elements!

Fabric Decoupage Star Trek Shoes

Fabric Decoupaged Star Trek shoes

I recently made myself a pair of awesome Star Trek shoes by decoupaging fabric onto some canvas sneakers. I followed a tutorial that I can’t for the life of me find again, but I’ll see what I can remember. (if you happen to know where the tutorial is, please link us up in the Comments section below!)

What I thought was clever about the tutorial was that you made a pattern for the shoes using duct tape, instead of just cutting pieces of fabric willy-nilly to fit.

Materials:

  • canvas shoes
  • 1/2 yd fabric
  • duct tape
  • fabric Mod Podge
  • small soft paintbrush
  • scissors and/or X-acto knife
  1. Place a piece of duct tape along the side of the canvas shoe and trim the excess off with sharp pointy scissors or an X-acto knife until you have a master pattern piece. Repeat for other side of the shoe.
  2. Remove the duct tape from the shoe. Place on fabric and cut around the pattern piece.
  3. Brush on fabric Mod Podge to shoe and carefully apply fabric to shoe. Smooth out any wrinkles.
  4. Allow to dry 30 minutes to overnight (follow instructions on bottle)
  5. Apply a coat of Mod Podge over the fabric to seal. Let dry.

I got the fabric at Jo-Ann’s – they have several patterns of both Star Trek and Star Wars fabrics.

There’s a Dalek in my front yard!!!

9291344281_3f6693ca96_z

Dulcet is a member of the Craftster community and recently posted about a surprise that her husband made for her: a Dalek for their front yard.

“Every time he rides his bike to work, he brings home metal stuff from the side of the road. We’ve been talking about him making something from them for quite a while. A few months ago, he got a crash course on welding from our neighbor who just happens to have a mig welder…The only things he purchased were the half-spheres, which are pipe caps. The eye-stalk in mounted in part of a truck hitch, and swivels up and down. The arm without the laser is made from a jack, and telescopes out. The head is a propane tank sliced up, with pieces of our broken garage-door-opener spring on top. The whole thing is four and a half feet tall.”

Knit a Very Cunning Cupcake

Jayne strapped on his hat
And in five seconds flat
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal.
Hero of Canton, The Ballad of Jayne Cobb

The hero of Canton had a hat.  Some tried to take the yarn away from us. Well then I say let us knit cake! Cupcakes, cunning ones at that. Blogger wipinsanity has created a free knitting pattern for a  Jayne cupcake.

Look at that cake, you know you want to make up.

Spock Bacon Art

st-bacon1

Jesse Azarian of Plainfield, VT has painted two portraits of Spock from Star Trek: TOS that are pretty interesting: he’s contemplating a slice of bacon.

Each of the paintings are 12″ x 15″, acrylic on Masonite, and are available in Jesse’s Etsy shop for $250 each. And yes, Vulcans are vegetarians, so maybe that’s why Spock is so interested in the bacon. He’s never had it before.
