Tutorial: Geeky Photography with Flash Stencils

Help! My house is being Space Invaded!

Lounge Space Invaders

Alright it isn’t – it’s just clever camera trickery in the form of flash stencilling. But it’s a pretty neat effect and a lot of fun, so I thought I’d share with you how it can be done.

You will need:

  • A camera capable of taking long exposures (30 seconds is about right)
  • A tripod or stable surface
  • An external flash (or a very bright torch)
  • A box
  • Card
  • Craft knife and cutting tools
  • Black tape
  • White paper

Life-Sized Papercraft Zelda

zelda_life_size_papercraft_2_by_minidelirium-d5x1ptd-e1362692038410Zelda’s come along just in time to make sure your life size cardboard Iron Man doesn’t get lonely!

“Minidelerium, a Swedish papercraft hobbyist, made this kickass Zelda figure in 126 hours, which is three weeks of working 8-5, Monday through Friday. (She then gave Zelda away, which seems so sad.).” But never fear…if you need your own life size Zelda and want to take a crack at it, it looks like you can get Minidelerium’s template from Paper’s Juke.

You can see more of Minidelerium’s work over at Deviant Art. “I build papercrafts to keep myself occupied, relax and keep my fingers nimble. all my papercrafts up until Midna has been with 80g/m paper, so I’d say I’m pretty good at this by now. ^_^ however, I’ve now started to work with thicker paper and I’m loving it! it’s so sturdy and easy with the thicker paper. I wouldn’t recommend thin paper if you want good and durable results. it buckles too easy.”

Nom nom – International Pi Day!

Nom nom - International Pi Day

Today is the 14th of March and that can only mean one thing. No, I don’t mean the birthday of Albert Einstein and Johann Strauss, I mean International Pi day! According to the Pi Day website:

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (a Greek letter) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Cursed Mr Drippy Amigurumi

Cursed Mr Drippy

After my post a few weeks ago featuring the Mr Drippy Amigurumi on Kitten’s Crafts, I decided I wanted to make myself one, and then make a cursed version of Mr Drippy (before he comes to life!) So, with permission, I adapted the pattern to make my very own cursed Mr Drippy amigurumi pattern!

Please DO NOT sell anything made from this pattern. I do not own the rights to the character Mr. Drippy and so it would be illegal to make profit from it. Also, part of this pattern is by Jastra Alethea on Kitten’s Crafts, and she has asked that nothing made from her pattern, which is freely available, is sold. Make them for yourself or as a gift, but please, do not sell them! Thank you!

Super Meatboy plushie

So this adorable Meatboy plushie was submitted and I was torn.

On the one hand, I’m a vegetarian, can I endorse this plushie?

On the other hand, I love love love and want to support independant game makers…can I not endorse this plushie?

Well, you saw those three loves in there. That tells you what you need to know about which side won. And I suppose he’s more than meat. He’s a boy. And he’s super.

Super meatboy plushieIf you love video games and you have not yet seen Indie Game: The Movie, it is available on Netflix streaming and I highly recommend it. You’ll get a great look at the behind the scenes love and care that went into the creation of Super Meatboy and your heart….oh my goodness your heart….it will be so warmed.

The plushie proper comes to us via MelloReflections.

P.S. Just a quick plug for a personal project! I’ve got a book pitch in as a finalist for pitchapalooza, the “American Idol” for book pitches. There is a “fan favorite” aspect to the contest and I’m in there (look for Marjee!) for a novel I’m working on called Nightmares of Neverwas.  It’s a book about nightmares and elite demon professors and all sorts of good stuff. If that is your bag, consider voting for me. If it isn’t, give an upvote to one of the other, budding, talented writers over there!
