How-To: Kerbal Space Program Costumes

Halloween is but 44 days away, meaning you only have 7 weekends left to finish your costume. Haven’t even thought of an idea yet? Well, allow me to suggest Kerbals from The Kerbal Space Program!

Kerbal Space Program Custome

Reddit user awallick has posted a great How-To for these Kerbal costumes that he and his friends created for Dragon Con this year, showing the ingenious process which includes paper macheing over gym balls to create the monstrous space helmets. Click here to see how the KSP costumes were created.

Looking forward to more great costume ideas in the run up to Halloween. Have one of your own? Let us know in the comments below.

DIY: Wooden Ocarina

DIY: Wooden Ocarina

I was proud as a peacock when I mastered Frère Jacques on the tin whistle. It took me hours! To me, being able to play the ocarina sounds like a feat in itself, but building one from scratch is even more phenomenal. If you’re up for the task, gladiator Bob has made a great Instructable for you to follow.

Are you looking forward to the new Pokémon games already? I can certainly say I’m thrilled with every bit of leaked news from badly-scanned Japanese magazines! The recent addition of Mega Evolutions throws something new to the mix and I can’t wait to find out awesome the even more powerful Pokémon will be in the games. As an European, the worldwide release date makes me a happy panda. To ease the wait til October, here’s a Pokémon craft.

While hats are not entirely in season, you’ll never know what the weather is going to be like in September, so you might want to start stocking up on them. (I mean, can you ever get enough?) I would surely recommend this Pokémon-inspired fleece hat by Higginstuff. For this beauty and more fleece hats and plushes, I direct you to her etsy shop.

It’s Dangerous To Go Alone! Take this. And this. And this.

It's Dangerous To Go Alone! Take This. And This. And This.

Sometimes it seems that crafting is all about the revival of ‘outdated and old fashioned stuff your grandmother did’. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t embrace new technology when it comes to geeky creations.

Today I’d like to show you Hyrule Foundry, “a blog that combines the ever-changing world of 3D printing and the timeless Zelda Universe.” They explore the benefits and limits of 3D printing and of various printers and software, while working with objects from The Legend of Zelda.

Once printers are cheaper and (therefore) more accessible, 3D printing is certainly going to chance the way we think about safety, property and ownership. Despite some problems a printing culture might cause, such as the recent ‘recipe’ for a gun or copyright infrignments, I sincerely hope it will make crafting even more interesting. Hyrule Foundry is a good sneak preview of what we might expect in the future.
