Knit Your Own Binary Scarf!

“Knitting may be a centuries-old craft, but the results can be quite high-tech. For example, it’s now possible to store data on a scarf. And the good news is, the construction is completely open source.”

This lady here is Christine Dumoulin, and she not only created this fabulous scarf (and wrote that witty introduction) but also shared the pattern on the magical interwebs!

I can’t knit, but it’s things like this that make me really wish I could. Once you get started the possibilities are endless, binary cardigans, binary baby clothes?

You can even go all out and hide secret messages in your binary wear like Craftster user Jaberwocky, who hid lines from the Tao Te Ching in their binary scarf!

Binary Scarf

The Lady Cartoonist (Meredeth Scheff) decided to make a new scarf each day of January. They’re all really unique and different, but I felt that the one she made for January 1 was the geekiest. She says it best:

“With this first one I wanted to have a binary themed scarf that incorporated the date (01/01/11) as well as the scarf number (01). Since that really wasn’t enough to fill a scarf, I decided to make it spell out ’scarf’ in binary, and highlight out of those numbers the date and scarf number. I had the colors be the scheme of an old computer screen, tan outside (the monitor frame) and green/lighter green for the monitor itself.”

Binary Code Love Pendant

I just found this sweet yet geeky pendant on Etsy from seller melissajlee. She hand-formed the pendant and added a resin heart. As of this post, it’s available to purchase.

How about a little robot love for Valentine’s Day? With just under a month to go, you have just enough time to whip up something for your geeky sweetheart (or yourself!)

I found several cute robot projects so I thought I would do a mini round-up. First we have this adorable Luvbot (pictured above), a knitting pattern available from Anna at Mochimochiland.

Keeping Geeks Warm!

Keeping Geeks Warm! It’s not hard to realize that no matter what kind of geek you are, whatever you do involves using your hands and fingers at some point.  Whether it’s typing away on a keyboard, working a game controller, or creating something in craft or art, use of the hands and fingers ends up being involved.  That’s why it’s important to take good care of your hands and keep them warm.

Gayla Oglesby has come up with the perfect pair of mittens for your geek of the binary nature.  While designed to appeal to the programmer and Linux lover, these Geek Mittens are geeky enough for anyone to want to wear.  She even provides the chart for them here.

Visions of Sugarplums (& Electric Sheep)

With the holidays fast approaching, it’s understandable that we might all be getting a little excited, girls and bots alike. (Come on—you can’t tell me Data didn’t want to put Spot in a kitty-sized Santa hat.)

So here’s one for the robots in the crowd—or at least the robot aficionados—who want to deck the halls in a suitably festive fashion for this human holiday known as Christmas.

First up is a binary stocking, appreciated by androids and the technologically inclined alike. Oh, and if you’re multi-talented, you can knit one yourself with n2 Imaginations Design‘s pattern.

Next we’ve got a stocking by AnimationsDesigns that may outshine even Rudolph’s nose. Robots? Check. LEDs? Check. Awesome? Definitely check. And look at all the detail—each little robot is different.

If you want something a bit more understated than an illuminated stocking, My Imaginary Boyfriend has a slightly more traditional, rather rustic design (as rustic as robots get, I suppose).

And finally, I had to include this adorable stocking stuffer robot ornament from Sleepy Robot 13. I know, it’s not a stocking per se, but he’s holding one, so it kinda counts, right?
