Lots o’ Lord of the Rings

Hobbits, wizards, elves, and kings.
What’s not to love about
Lord of the Rings?

Many a crafter has been so inspired,
to knit, sew, or sculpt from this story admired.

But some feel the need to go a bit further,
to celebrate this story with a touch of odd fervor.

So check out these crafts, both geeky and unique,
and I promise I’ll stop rhyming in faux-Tolkien speak.

Eye of Sauron Journal

Sauron Journal

Etsy seller ArtBug offers this one-of-a-kind Eye of Sauron journal, perfect for scribbling down all your evil plans. What I love about this most of all is that the eye friggin’ LIGHTS UP.

Hobbit Feet Baby Booties

Hobbit Feet baby booties

I’ve seen various incarnations of these crazy hobbit-feet slippers, but none so cute as these wee baby booties. Knit some up for your own little hobbit with this free pattern offered by Penwiper. Grown-ups can also get in on the hairy foot action with this Hobbit foot pattern from The Unique Sheep.

Door of Durin Beaded Necklace

Door of Durin beaded necklace

It took Etsy seller Whitestar Jewelry 15 hours to hand-bead this striking Door of Durin necklace.  What impresses me more is the story behind the store, as the maker uses beadwork as a way to soothe her bipolar disorder.

Frodo Plush
Frodo Doll

Craftster member MumbleFord wasn’t content to simply buy a plush Frodo from a store. She had to make her own! I think he turned out even cuter than the original. She was also generous enough to share her pattern, so you can make your own hobbit.

Map of Middle Earth Cigar Box
Map of Middle Earth Box

The latest LOTR swap on Craftster yielded some amazing projects, from replica cloaks to an amigurumi Bilbo. What impressed me the most, though, was this map of Middle Earth burned into a cigar box, made by Craftster Gommeriffic. Perfect thing for hiding your Old Toby in, eh?

Eye of Sauron T-shirt
Eye of Sauron Tie Dyed Shirt

Throw Led Zepplin’s “Ramble On” on the turntable and rock out with this crazy Eye of Sauron tie-dyed T-shirt, available from Portland-based Etsy seller Tie Dyed Monkeys.

Miniature J.R.R. Tolkien Art Doll
JRR Tolkien clothespin doll

The man himself, adorably immortalized in clothespin-doll form. Debbie Ritter (Etsy’s Uneek Doll Designs) also has a little C.S. Lewis doll. Makes me wish she had a dollhouse version of the Eagle and Child pub they used to meet in!

Embroidered Tentacle comin’ to get you!!!!

I HAVE to feature this because jemimah was recently ROBBED (robbed I tell ya!!) of a place in Craftster’s featured projects for January.

For those of you who don’t know (I didn’t, and I embroider!) this type of 3 dimensional embroidery is called stumpwork, and it’s formed by using wire to help support your embroidered piece. This little baby has (to date) amassed 6 pages of comments since the 16th January. It’s really blown our minds over on the needlework board, I’d never seen stumpwork before, and to see it used in such a contemporary way is truly stunning. this hoop is only 3 (or 4?) inches wide, this is a tiny tiny bundle of AWESOME!!

Cinnamoon has by far the best suggestion: “That’s amazing. It would be really cool to have a whole row of them at different heights so that it would look like a sea monster was coming through the wall.”, you’re not wrong Cinnamoon!!

Geek Glasses Roundup

Nothing says geek love to me quite like big plastic nerd glasses do, so this week’s roundup theme is geek glasses crafts!

So here we go, in no particular order…

Geek glasses roundupDeviantArt user TheNaughtySeamstress made this emo squid. I think he looks quite well-read. His creator says: “This little squid loves Death Cab for Cutie, scarves, and argyle sweaters with tight jeans.” Well there you have it.

Geek glasses roundupFor those of us who never want to take our glasses off, even at bedtime, Etsy seller BibBon is selling this stylish glasses-covered sleep mask. Ohh the geek dreams you could have.

Geek glasses roundupAlso available for purchase on etsy, a spectacles ring made by seller lsette. She also has these tiny little glasses available as earrings!

Geek glasses roundupPerhaps not purely a craft, but certainly valuable to geeks everywhere, is this glasses-shaped USB drive sold by imm living.

Geek glasses roundupThe tiniest lil nerd you know needs this perfect onesie from HutchMe’s Etsy shop. In fact, she sells many types of onesies suitable for geek babies (and their parents), including many with a Star Wars theme.

Geek glasses roundupFor those few geeks who do not require corrective lenses, but still want to make their geekiness perfectly clear, artlife on Etsy sells these 1.5-inch badge buttons for you to wear with your pocket protectors.

Geek glasses roundupThis past Christmas, craftster member lilliesinmycereal decorated with a ton of Hello Kitties, and also included this special nerd Hello Kitty. Check out the rest of her decorations–they look really cute all grouped together!

Geek glasses roundupAny self-respecting globe-trotting geek needs a snazzy place to keep her/his passport, and Etsy seller Jenni20 has you covered. Although this photo shows it in green, black and raspberry are also available.

Geek glasses roudupClose cousin to the traditional geek glasses is the cats eye glasses. youheartus’s Etsy shop has numerous needlepoint designs for sale, but I particularly like this one with the glasses, especially with the tiny rhinestone details on the corners.

Geek glasses roundupRounding out this week’s roundup is this awesome lime green tote from Etsy seller naomicayne. If you’re more interested in a nerdy t-shirt, Naomi’s got that too.

That’s it for this week’s roundup! Everyone enjoy the weekend!

Math Mobile

I think every new parent goes through a lot to make sure their nursery has a special something that  reflects both who they are and who they hope their little one will be. Miss Zish‘s husband is a math major, so after he mentioned how cool a Math Mobile would be, she set to work with the sculpey and made it a reality! I never thought I’d be posting a craft from a parenting board, but this one was just so awesome I had to put it up! Love the little Pi! (via Babycenter).
