Tutorial Tuesday: Replica of the 7th Doctor’s Umbrella!

Via Crafty Tardis.

The Livejournal Group Crafty Tardis has had some great work in it recently (that’s why I’m featuring a helluva lot of it) but this one really grabbed my attention because it’s something I’d never even CONSIDER doing myself, and it’s just such a perfect costuming prop! (and the 7th Doctor is one of the Husb0t’s favourites, he gets VERY defensive about Sylvester McCoy… I dont get it myself… we don’t talk about it)

Crafty Tardis Contributor kingpinwriter modified an umbrella to emulate that of the 7th doctor with great results. The walk-through includes spray-painting, drilling, sand papering and acrylic bending, all things which I’d be FAR too afraid to try myself, and would probably result in a call to the fire station. So well done for not causing any major injury to yourself or others KingPin :-) (perhaps I should stop measuring others by my own perceived ineptitude)

Adventurous Dr Who fans, go forth, craft yourself the most awesome rain protection device known to man…

Tutorial Tuesday! Reverse Stencilled Tote Bag

Here’s a neat idea! lets think ‘outside the stencil’.

That’s exactly what jennieingram did when she had to quickly step into the Dr Who Swap on Craftster. Round 5 of the Dr Who swap that is… these swaps are hugely popular, they’re going to go on forever! Round 6 is crafting away as I type!

Jennie has shared a tutorial on how to achieve this effective technique on her blog, and also on Craftster.

But wait, there’s more! Turns out Jennie is quite an avid Geek-Crafter and tutorial writer. Check out her Doctor’s Companion Charm Bracelet and her tutorial on how to make Laminated Paper Bookmarks including a sonic screwdriver and a golden snitch.

Crocheted Woodland Animals Modeled After Influential Women

C9ArHdc

Alexandria Milford, also known as quirky1crochet on Imgur, posted a series of photos, of crocheted animals that are modeled after influential women throughout history. The photo above is Rosie the Riveter Fox and Frida Kahlo Bunny. Some of her other creations include Rosa Parks Deer, Amelia Earhart Raccoon and Marie Curie Mouse.

If you’re interested in buying any of her animals, you can find her on Etsy.

Or, if you’re interested in attempting your own influencial crocheted animals, it looks like these are fairly small and probably probably made with a lightweight acrylic yarn and a series of single crochets. If you need help getting started, you might want to look at some of these sets to help you get your sizing right: Star Wars Crochet, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer Crochet or Disney Classic Crochet.

Where is Snoopy When You Need Him?

DtupOCi

In January, Rapola posted about the Radio Flyer scooter he turned into the Red Baron’s plane.

He took a new Radio Flyer scooter (from the 2000’s), got rid of the plastic parts and gave it a red baron inspired make-over. While it looks like a relic from the 1950’s, that is due to Radio Flyer making toys in China, to lower specifications than we have in the States. Rapola got this for $28 at a local auction.

Steel wool and stripper took care of the old paint. A couple things they were trying to accomplish with the fiberglass:
1. Patch all of the holes from the cheap plastic grill/steering column
2. Cover the ugly factory seam where the the two halves of the body meet
3. Lay foundation to better profile the scooter

This was actually the third scooter he’s done, last one was a P-40 Warhawk themed scooter. No word on if he sells them once completed, or if he keeps them for his own collection.

“Ahsoka Quinn” as a Star Wars/Batman Cosplay Mashup

lEmxJ2U

Knightsgarrison recently posted her Ahsoka Tano/Harley Quinn mashup on Imgur, because a friend (pictured above) wanted to cosplay as Ahsoka at Star Wars Celebration, but knowing that Ahsoka is to Star Wars as Harley Quinn is to literally every other con in the world, we figured…they’d just do both. It was her first time building something so involved and she learned (and screwed up) a lot along the way. She’s pretty proud of the results.

The seams drove her crazy. Luckily, it’s canon that Ahsoka sometimes wears head/lekku jewelry, so she bought some studded ribbon and glued it on. It doesn’t hide everything, but it helps a lot.

Total build time was 24 hours, spread it out over a month, and the total cost was about $100.

And as a total score, Knightsgarrison’s friend got a picture with the voice of Ahsoka herself: Ashley liked it so much she asked her assistant to take a picture with her own phone.

AT-AT Walker Mailbox

C7MOVLvWwAAKCVd

According to Roadside America, there is an AT-AT Walker mailbox in Kansas City, MO. It’s reported the homeowner made it himself, after a drunk driver took out the original, and that it’s anchored with six feet of rebar and 500 pounds of concrete. It’s not going anywhere if another driver hits it.
