My Geeky Valentine: A Photoshop How-to

With Valentine’s Day mere days away, you may be wracking your brain for ideas for that perfect way to share how you feel with that special person(s) in your life. Well, who can say it better than you? Why not make your own Valentine? And since we’re of the geeky sort, why don’t we dial up some digital goodness in Photoshop, hmmm?

Star Trek Valentine from HowtoGeek.com  Firefly Valentine from HowtoGeek.com

HowtoGeek.com offers a full step-by-step tutorial on how to create your own customized geek valentine in Photoshop. They also have very thoughtfully put together 11 geeky valentine images, all zipped together and ready for you to download.  Pictured above are my two favorites from the set, but other images include references to the video game Portal, Star Wars, multi-sided dice, and Futurama.

Which one do you like best? Or what custom Valentine would you like to make?

Yodagurumi!

I have a confession to make.

I’m a geek. I love most all things sci-fi and fantasy. However, I’ve not understood why or how the whole kawaii movement began to infiltrate my geeky world. What’s with the big eyes and everything all of a sudden has to be teeny tiny? I just shook my head in confusion.

And then…I found yodagurumi!

GAH!!! I must have him! Now, the website is in Spanish which could be an obstacle for some, but I can tell you that she doesn’t admit to whether the patterns are her own creation or if she bought them somewhere. Regardless, I MUST HAVE! LOL

Creepetz has created quite a bit of Kawaii Creatures but if you keep scrolling, you will see the entire Neverland cast, Alice in Wonderland with the Mad Hatter and Cheshire cat, Spiderman, and Darth Vader as well. I read her Spiderman entry and it said that her Spidey is 25 cm (or approximately 9.5 inches). If so, that means that Yodagurumi is most likely about 4-5 inches in height. My aging eyes rebel at the very thought of working with a project that small!

Much Ado About the Tenth Doctor

Much Ado About the Tenth DoctorOr how to transform figures into other characters of David Tennant. Yes, you read that right. Dieastra has been transforming action figures of the Tenth Doctor into other characters portrayed by David Tennant in various plays and films. Her medium used is Milliput which is a UK brand of epoxy putty.

The most recent creation by Dieastra is transforming his first appearance figure as the Tenth Doctor into David’s role in Much Ado About Nothing. Previous, Dieastra has transformed the pinstripe suited Tenth Doctor figure into Hamlet, both the tuxedo version and the ribcage t shirt version of Hamlet.

Dieastra provides step by step photos and directions here with how to do bare arms, here with how to make the feet bare, and here as Dieastra describes developing the shirt and jeans for the one Hamlet figure, finishing up with the final tuxedo touches here.

From there, she has recreated the white navy uniform pictured here from Much Ado About Nothing and gives the tips for it there with clear photos and instruction. The best part is that there will be more to come as she does his full dress uniform from the end of the play and the superman shirt as well!

The Lorax & His Happy Trees

By now everyone must have realized that there is a Lorax movie coming to theaters soon. The date of its release escapes me because I’m probably just going to torrent it. All I’m sure of its that Danny Devito is playing the Lorax. This makes me smile because he’s not only one of the most hilarious actors out there; but I’m pretty sure he’s also the same height as the Lorax. (0:

For those who don’t know their Dr. Seuss, the Lorax is a fuzzy orange tree hugger who lechture about how it is your responsiblity to save the trees. I’ve always loved the Lorax because his fuzzy mustache makes happy. I could care less about what his message is… he’s FUZZY! Squee.

The super awesome team at Craft Gossip has posted a how to on Lorax Truffula Tree Pencils. Here is the link to all the fun: LORAX TREE PENCILS

Girly Gone Geek: Batman Princess, plus Star Wars Princess

Though we’re months away from Halloween, what’s Valentine’s Day without a little sweetness?  Behold, the Batman Princess.

Batman Princess

As spotted on Comics Alliance, this post comes from Donkey’s tumblr page. Alas, with no commentary. I would love to know the backstory behind the costume, and the neighbors’ reactions.

Donkey’s tumblr page also links to her flickr album, where I found this little beauty – not quite Princess Leia, but a Star Wars princess, nonetheless.

I love how the little girl is allowed to embrace both her geeky and girly selves. How have you helped young girls feel empowered about their love of geeky things?
