Enterprise Fingerless Mittens

Star Trek and fingerless gloves. It doesn’t get much better than that, especially when the high today is going to be 23 degrees. These were made by Audrey Paquin and published on her Ravelry page (there’s a free pattern). Audrey created the pattern for her sister’s friend (who is also a Star Trek fan).

I love that you can tell what it’s the Enterprise, even if you just see a tiny picture. Sometimes you see knitted items that are supposed to have a picture, but you can’t really tell what it’s a picture of without being told. But this is the Enterprise, no question. I love this color for gloves, because they go with everything. And they look so warm!

Inception Arthur and Eames Block Print

Inception Block PrintContinuing my trend of catching up on last year’s must-see films, I finally sat down to watch Inception. Holy moly, did it blow my mind! Visuals, characters, story, it had it all, not to mention an ending that will have you mulling for days.

Amber Whitney, a Juneau, Alaska-based illustrator, captured two of my favorite Inception characters – Eames and Arthur – in this eye-catching block print. I can’t decide what I like the best, the shadows of their faces, the details of their clothes, or the maze-like style of the ampersands.

Drop by her Etsy store, Unicorn Empire Prints, and see her other block print offerings, including some truly beautiful Sherlock Holmes pieces and some fun homages to Star Trek.

Mr. Spock Altered Antique Plate

Mr Spock Altered Art PlateI first spotted Angela Rossi’s “altered antique plates” in the pages of BUST magazine, when her “Dear Ol’ Chunk” plate made their 2010 must-have gift guide.

The Los Angeles-based artist takes flea market finds and thrift store treasures and transforms them into unique pieces of pop art. These plates infuse the classic charm of china with an edge of media-age irony, and range from the merely kitschy to the deeply creepy.

Plenty of geek icons have graced her plates, from Frankenstein’s Monster to E.T. Not to mention, plenty of zombies.

One of my favorites is this one of Star Trek‘s Mr. Spock, which has, alas, sold. But there are many other weird and wacky plates available on the Beat Up Creations Etsy shop, so check it out.

Free Zero Punctuation pot holder pattern

Zero Punctuation Potholder

Zero Punctuation is one of my absolute favorite web video series. I love hearing Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw’s hilariously scathing video game reviews just as much as I enjoy watching the cheerfully warped animations that illustrate them.

So, I was over the moon when I came across Ilana‘s  free pattern for Zero Punctuation Imp pot holders. These little scamps translate really well into knitted form, and would bring a touch of fun into any geeky kitchen.

You may recognize Ilana’s work from the  Star Trek pot holders that were featured here on Geek Crafts last month. I’m looking forward to seeing what other awesome patterns she comes up with!

The Big Bang Theory Cross-stitch: Bazinga!

The Big Bang Theory Cross-stitch: BazingaHave I ever mentioned that my husband is a huge geek, yet not your typical geek? He’s obsessed with computers  but does not like sci-fi, comic books, or video games. You can all gasp in horror now. Watching The Big Bang Theory together is funny because I get all the geeky pop culture references and he gets all the actual science references. Everyone’s got their strong points, right? Anyway, I was *thrilled* to see this on Craftster tonight! Lady Leitzen stitched up Sheldon’s catch phrase, Bazinga. The little Star Trek hand is great and she even thought up ways to make this more awesome:

i think i might have to do another one, but if i do, i’d change the “i” in bazinga to a lightning bolt (for the flash), then around the lizard and spock i’d do a yellow rose (for texas) on each side, then the outermost flowers i’d change to double helixes, or atoms or something.

I might have to make this for my husband for Christmas :)

Crocheted Spock Head

Crocheted Spock HeadHere’s something awesome from Amy – we’ve been dazzled by her amigurumi skills before and now she’s crocheting mounted trophy heads. You can buy Yetis and Cthulhu, but I’m quite enamored with Spock. (It’s so weird, I’m not really a Star Trek fan, but something about old school Spock really appeals to me.) Definitely check out her blog and Etsy shop.
