Another Intro!

Hello everyone!  I’m Leitadala, one of your new geek craft writers.  I’ve finally finished making my Christmas crafts, and before the January ones come due I figured I’d introduce myself here.  I’m a varied crafter, but my strongest are fiber arts.  The crocheting comes by nature, the knitting by nurture.  What I mean by that is that my Step-Grandmothter taught me to knit when I was young, and when I was older I felt compelled to pick up the crochet hook.  I found I loved it, and then learned from my maternal Grandmother that her Grandmother used to crochet all the time!  I’ve since passed down both crafts to the next generation of girls in my family, hoping that they will keep this timeless tradition alive.

I come by the geek part honestly as well.  I love Star Wars, World of Warcraft (where I met my husband), Pokemon, Disney, Anime, Renissance Festivals, and (of course) Comic Cons.  I look forward to sharing with you lots of geek-crafty things in the future.

Until then, I better go wrap my Christmas African Flower dishcloths!

Felt Bacon Ornament

I realize that bacon isn’t exactly geeky. But it is delicious, and I imagine a lot of geeks love bacon, so I present to you Serena’s Felt Bacon Ornament.  It will make a  great last minute Christmas gift, if you didn’t get your bacon scented car air freshener in time. There is a full tutorial on her blog, including how to make it smell like real bacon!

Cthulhu Tree Topper

Nothing says Christmas like Cthulhu. I found this hand felted Cthulhu Tree Topper while browsing Etsy. NifNak‘s Etsy shop is full of every kind of felted wool creature and craft you can dream of, including Cthulhu ornaments to match the tree topper, or Flying Spaghetti Monster ornaments and tree toppers for the snarky Atheist in your life.

Angry Birds Plushie

Hello, I am Renee, and I am an Angry Birds addict. Whew, feels good to get that off of my chest! When Caroline sent this adorable, angry little guy to me, I knew I had to share this Angry Birds Plushie and point you to her blog for a tutorial on how to make one yourself (and she just put up a tutorial for Angry Birds (and Pigs!) Christmas Ornaments made from Dollar Store supplies).

Sci-Fine Art, Humor and Time Machines with Rik Livingston

There aren’t a lot of nice things about living in the desert, at least not until Fall/Winter time, but one nice thing about living here is the amazing Crossroads Cafe and Tavern, where I was having breakfast when the painting to the left caught my eye. I took in the various pieces by the artist I would later discover was the one Rik Verlin Livingston, and I knew I had to track him down and introduce my Geek Crafters to his “Sci-Fine Art“.

We communicated in e-mails a few times before I met Rik at an artist reception held at the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce, which featured more of his work, to include some really great comic books. He was friendly, funny, and seemed to handle the attention (and the controversy surrounding one of his pieces) very well. I was really excited to be able to ask a few questions about his craft, his feelings on censorship, and of course, time travel.

The Big Bang Theory Cross-stitch: Bazinga!

The Big Bang Theory Cross-stitch: BazingaHave I ever mentioned that my husband is a huge geek, yet not your typical geek? He’s obsessed with computers  but does not like sci-fi, comic books, or video games. You can all gasp in horror now. Watching The Big Bang Theory together is funny because I get all the geeky pop culture references and he gets all the actual science references. Everyone’s got their strong points, right? Anyway, I was *thrilled* to see this on Craftster tonight! Lady Leitzen stitched up Sheldon’s catch phrase, Bazinga. The little Star Trek hand is great and she even thought up ways to make this more awesome:

i think i might have to do another one, but if i do, i’d change the “i” in bazinga to a lightning bolt (for the flash), then around the lizard and spock i’d do a yellow rose (for texas) on each side, then the outermost flowers i’d change to double helixes, or atoms or something.

I might have to make this for my husband for Christmas :)
