Fan-tab-stic Chain Mail

I own a purse made from soda pop tops (or pull tabs or whatever you want to call them). It’s somewhere between this Socorro design (it’s a shoulder bag) and the Masha design (not a messenger bag, but it has a flap closure). I did not, however, pay upwards of $100—I lucked out and bought it at Goodwill for a mere $8. Best. Purchase. Ever.

So I’ve been thinking about other things one might make out of soda tabs, and it appears I’m not alone. There are projects galore (complete with handy tutorials) geared toward both fashion plates and Ren Faire nerds. Thought it’d be worth posting a roundup of some of the more interesting projects and different techniques I’ve come across thus far. Oh, and they all seem quite manageable, as long as you have patience and access to a vast quantity of pop tops. Here are a few of my favorites:

Pokeball Duct Tape Flower

Pokeball Duct Tape FlowerWhen I saw this, I did a double take.  I was browsing through Etsy when I saw this Pokeball Duct Tape Flower by DuctTapeRose.  I have always been a fan of Duct Tape creations, from my own clumsy attempts at making duct tape wallets to other peoples much better attempts.

If you have the same love of Duct Tape as me, I know you are amazed at the level of detail here, but you haven’t seen anything yet.  Visit DuctTapeRose on Etsy to see some duct tape creations that will absolutely blow your mind.

I think I’m in love.

High Scoring Mum-Make

This picture was emailed to be by Alea, who’s mom made these oven cloths. Pretty awesome, right? I’ll let Alea explain in her own words;

Basically I just asked her if she could crochet stuff like that and she said she’ll give it a try. Took her about a year to find the time to do it, but for me it was worth waiting. The funny thing is that although the Game Boys we used to have belonged to me and my sister, my Mom was the one playing Tetris all the time and setting the highest records.

Well Alea’s mom doesn’t have a blog, or an Etsy or even a flicker account, so I’m afraid for now this pic is all your getting (but if we all gang up I’m sure we can persuade her to show off her brilliantness a bit more). In the mean time, I’m jealous because my mum can’t crochet OR play Tetris….

Hey look! It’s Yeti and Friends!

I’m interrupting my previously scheduled post because I found the Etsy shop of Yeti and Friends. Who are Yeti and Friends, you ask? Why it is a fellow who makes yetis (and presumably his friends) into trophy heads. It seems a bit sad and macabre and not at all becoming of a vegetarian such as myself to endorse trophy heads, but these heads seem pretty happy about being decapitated and mounted. I mean, look at this pretty little girl depicted (and decapitated wakka wakka) here. Pure bliss on that furry little maw.  So to each their own, ya know?

Anywhoddle, I had the pleasure of having a booth next to these guys at the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco this past October (it’s like an even nerdier Comic-Con).  Their booth was constantly packed, they brought tons of yetis and were completely sold out by the end. They were incredibly friendly and thoughtful booth neighbors and the products were very high-quality. Seriously Jim Henson-esque. Given the fact that I have the rare opportunity to share something I’ve actually be able to see first hand, I was excited to stumble across their shop on Etsy. Be sure to check out their diverse offerings of heads!

Hope Your Day is Shiny, Valentine!

Firefly Printable Valentines

What’s Valentine’s Day without a little bling? Or, at least, something…shiny?  As pinned by Kelsey Bennett, the TenthCrewMember over at FireflyFans posted some very shiny printable Firefly Valentines, so you can show some love to your favorite Browncoat.

But wait! There’s more! As in two more versions! I think the one from Jayne, thinking of his Valentine in his bunk, is my favorite.

Surely giving one of these Valentines will keep you from going to the Special Hell, right?
