For Captain Picard Day, a Star Trek mug cozy. Hot.

Star Trek mug cozy by Katie Smith

Did you know that June 16th is recognized by Star Trek fans as Captain Picard Day? According to Memory Alpha:

Captain Picard Day was an annual event held aboard the USS Enterprise-D for the ship’s schoolchildren. Activities included a contest, judged by Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself, in which the children created paintings and models of the captain. Picard was himself not very fond of the event, as he generally did not respond well to children.

To honor Captain Picard’s favorite beverage, here is an easy mug cozy for you to whip together to enjoy a cup of tea. Earl Grey. Hot. Katie over at Punk Projects has all the how-to details waiting for you in the Ready Room. You still have time to make one before Tuesday.

How do you plan to celebrate Captain Picard Day?

Star Trek Craft: Infinite Ornaments in Infinite Combinations

Vulcan IDIC Ornament by Originals by Terry

Looking for some more geeky ornament ideas? Check out this pattern from Originals by Terry – a sparkly Vulcan symbol from Star Trek. She has this plastic canvas cross-stitch pattern in her Craftsy shop, along with other Star Trek images.

This Vulcan symbol represents the IDIC philosophy – “Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations,” which according to the Memory Alpha wiki, celebrates “the vast array of variables in the universe. In the Vulcan language, the term for IDIC is Kol-Ut-Shan.”

I like the simplicity of the IDIC symbol, and that it would just look like any other ornament unless you’re steeped in geek culture. Which of course we are.

How are you geekifying your tree/home this year?

Star Trek Dresser

Demostheness posted a photo of a custom paint job, Star Trek-style, a friend of her’s did on a dresser.

The font is from “The Next Generation” series, but the colors and the insignia are from the original series. It’s a seamless joining of the generations! I mean, now her friend has a place to keep all of her uniforms, but hopefully, she keeps the red shirts somewhere else!

Star Trek Craft: ComBadge Earrings

Star Trek ComBadge earrings by Tally Heilke

Stay in touch with your away team with these fantastic Star Trek ComBadge Earrings. Tally Heilke provides a full tutorial on her blog. Not exactly a typical Father’s Day sort of craft, but suitable for me, since my dad was the one who initiated me into the world of Star Trek.

As a scrapbooker with a basement full of paper stash, I was intrigued to see the earrings are made out of cardstock! Plus it’s an excuse to break out some power tools! <insert Tim Allen-esque grunting>

Are you planning any Star Trek cosplay for upcoming cons? These would be the perfect accessory!

Star Trek Craft: Bajoran Earring

Bajoran earring by Patrick Hassel-Zein

Being a fan of all things Star Trek, I was pleased to find this write-up on designing a Bajoran earring by Patrick Hassel-Zein.

If you’re familiar with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, you would have seen Major Kira almost always sporting a Bajoran earring on her right ear. Ensign Ro Laren also wore one on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

On his webpage, Patrick provides a little historic look into the Bajoran earring, and then offers some suggestions for designing your own.
