My Bouncy Neighbor Totoro for Geek Babies

I get a little thrill when I see crafty projects that repurpose/upcycle a useful something into a geekier version of a useful something. Case in point: Cation Design’s Totoro variation on an existing “Snugabunny” bouncer. I mean, really, if a manufacturer can make up something called a Snugabunny, it equally stands to reason it could be morphed into a Totoro.

For those unfamiliar, “My Neighbor Totoro” is a highly popular anime movie written and directed by the world-renowned Hayao Miyazaki, who also made “Spirited Away,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

Cation’s post walks readers through her creative process, including crafting a fleece-lined Totoro-shaped slip cover and dangling Soot Sprites.

Keeping Geeks Warm!

It’s not hard to realize that no matter what kind of geek you are, whatever you do involves using your hands and fingers at some point. Whether it’s typing away on a keyboard, working a game controller, or creating something in craft or art, use of the hands and fingers ends up being involved. That’s why it’s important to take good care of your hands and keep them warm.

Gayla Oglesby has come up with the perfect pair of mittens for your geek of the binary nature. While designed to appeal to the programmer and Linux lover, these Geek Mittens are geeky enough for anyone to want to wear. She even provides the chart for them here.

Everything Alice Book Review, Craft and Giveaway!

When I heard that there was an Alice book to review I jumped at the chance, and begged. I have loved everything Alice (how fitting!) my whole life.Everything Alice: The Wonderland Book of Makes & Bakes by Hannah Read-Baldrey and Christine Leech is a truly beautiful book. Even if you aren’t crafty but love Alice, this would still be a good book to own as the pictures and projects are stunning.I actually made two projects from Everything Alice to show you. The first one is so simple, even a non crafter can do it. No, really. It’s called Dress Me Alice and White Rabbit. This project is so simple, that you can even cheat a little, which I totally did. They say to copy the pictures and then glue them onto thin cardboard. I simply copied them onto white cardstock and cut out the middle man. The downside to this is that you really have to bend the spine to get the book to lay flat enough to copy it without shadows and stuff on the sides.

I also made the Cheshire Cat handwarmer. I sewed it by hand and you can tell I am by no means a seamstress. It was fun to make though so that really is all that matters. I’m going to actually keep mine in the freezer for headaches.

Warm and fuzzy guts

Do you remember high school biology? Your lab partner was a little shy… and a lot adorable? The two of you acted bravely as you stole glances and awkwardly prodded at some poor little critter splayed out on the dissecting pan ?

Yeah, I don’t remember that either. My lab partner was a creepy spaz (yes, you–Brian), and I still have the suspicion that more than one starfish stomach ended up inside of his nose. >>shudder<<

Fortunately, Emily Stoneking can takes those macabre memories and make them warm and fuzzy with her AKnitomy knitted dissections.

Let’s forget, for a moment, how faithfully the organs are placed inside of the rat and freak out about Stoneking’s use of varying fibers and gauges to bring to life (or, uh, death) the different organs and tissues: from the diaphanous, pinned-back skin to the ropey little tail.
Be sure to check out her other critters. Frogs, fetal pigs, earthworms, human brains, and an (oh my) Easter Bunny await. A lovely, caring homage to all the poor little critters who gave their lives for our awkward, adolescent memories.

Crafting Christmas Movies

I have a few movies I watch over and over and over again this season, that always put me in the holiday spirit. And I’m sure most of you, like me, can’t sit still and watch a movie. You have to be doing something, whether it’s crocheting, sewing, cutting, drawing, (anything you can do on the couch, really).

Well this season, why not make something from your favorite movie, while watching you favorite movie. You could even race and see if you can finish your craft before the movie is over. No pausing the DVD for bathroom breaks, that’s cheating. Here are a few I’ve found.

If you grew up in the 80’s, like me, you know all about the forgotten Henson Classic, The Christmas Toy. It was released on DVD a few years ago, which is great, because my VHS copy recorded off the TV was really wearing out. Now you can make your own Mew, and have the “cat toy, people toy” argument until your heart’s content.

My next favorite is another Henson great, Emmet Otter’s Jug-band Christmas. (something about Jim

Henson and Christmas just go hand in hand) Check out this amazing needle felted work from REMAINSOFTHEDAY.

The Muppets make great crafting projects, because they are made out of felt to begin with. It’s a lot easier to recreate than a person, although, this next boy looks pretty amazing in felt. Here’s an Emmet Otter I crocheted.

So go grab your supplies and your remote, cuddle up on the couch with that blanket you made last week, and whip up some great crafts to go with your movie. How cute would it be to give someone the DVD of a great Christmas movie, and one of these crafts to go with it?
