Jennifer Thurston, hostess of X-treme Knitting is my new hero. Not only are these three dinos the cutest little guys I’ve seen in a long while, but she put her camera to use and got this adorable picture of her Knitted Dinosaurs. The best thing about these adorable little guys is that Jennifer Thurston is giving these patterns away!
I had the pleasure of setting up shop at TopCon this past weekend, a small convention in Topeka, Kansas. It being their hometown, of course the IBOTKS were there (Iron Brothers of Topeka, KS). They’re a family cosplay group that’s built some amazing Ironman themed cosplays, along with many other costumes too. I just happened to catch this video of Ironman and War Machine getting their groove on with a T-Rex (and it’s hard to see, but there’s this little kid in the middle of it all dancing his little heart out too). Those may not be the droids you’re looking for, but O Comic Con’s inaugural show was definitely something to see, especially the cosplay. (All photos courtesy of Brent Schumacher from BPI Multimedia).
A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasuring of taking The Costume Wrangler’s Closet to O Comic Con, the first pop culture convention in the Omaha, NE region. The expected turnout was estimated to be around 3,000 people. They had twice that over the course of three days, and attendees did not disappoint when it came to the cosplay.
From She-Hulk, to Thor, to Anime characters, Steampunk Wonder Woman, kids in costume, the 501st Legion, a kick-butt dinosaur, and so much more, there were tons of great cosplayers strutting their stuff at O Con. Wow. Just…wow. This embroidered tribute to Ray Harryhausen (who passed away earlier this year at the age of 92) was posted to our Geek Crafts Flickr Pool awhile ago, and it blew me away! It was stitched completely in redwork by the awesome Ellen Schinderman. Ray Harryhausen was a special effects artist specializing in stop motion animation and movie monsters. If you’re into horror or sci-fi movies at all, there’s a good chance that you’ve seen at least one of the movies he worked on, like Clash of the Titans (1981) or Jason and the Argonauts (1963). One of my favourites was The Valley of Gwangi (1969) because (of course) it was about a dinosaur!
Karen Nyberg works for NASA as a flight engineer, and is currently floating around the International Space Station, orbiting the Earth every 91-and-a-bit minutes at an altitude of around 380 km. She became the 50th woman to ever go into space in 2008 when she was mission specialist on board Space Shuttle Discovery.
But you know what makes Karen so awesome? She is a crafter. And last week Karen crafted a toy dinosaur in SPACE! It doesn’t get much more geek-crafty than that.
Karen says, “I made this dinosaur for my son last Sunday, September 22. It is made out of velcro-like fabric that lines the Russian food containers found here on the International Space Station. It is lightly stuffed with scraps from a used t-shirt.” So not only is this a fun craft, but it’s also some pretty good upcycling too!
