Return of the Geek Cat

cat toys2

There was a lot of celebrating on the farm today.  After three weeks and two days, we finally found our cat, Ari!  Apparently he was hiding out in our closest neighbor’s shed the whole time.  I was pleasantly surprised that even after a 23 day stint in the pitch-dark shed he didn’t really resemble Gollum at all.

In addition to more cuddles than he’s comfortable with, I’m making him these geek cat toys as a welcome home gift.  (Underneath that cool cat exterior, I have no doubt that Ari is a total Whovian, Final Fantasy, AND Harry Potter nerd.)  The best part?  No sewing machine is needed for these adorable toys from Allons-Y Kimberly.

Oh man, remember when we posted this?  What a charming place for a geek cat to hang his hat!

Rocking Ride-In Spaceship

rocking_ride_in_spaceship_by_steveswoodentoys-d83y48p

Steve of Steve’s Wooden Toys of New Zealand, posted this Rocking Ride-In X-Wing Fighter on Deviant Art.

The little R2-D2 in the back is removable so he can accompany the pilot to the swamps of wooden Degobah. The rocker is made of solid wood: pine, native macrocarpa and rimu. It measures 1150 mm (45 inches) long, 1200 mm (47 inches) wide, 650 mm (25.5 inches) tall, and the seating area is 280 mm (9 inches) wide. The wings can also be unbolted to allow for ease of intergalactic travel in the back of a medium sized car.

The Vanilla Studio – Dinosaur Menorahs

It’s time for Hanukkah! And what says Hanukkah more than a metallic painted toy dinosaur?

Lisa Pierce of The Vanilla Studio makes hand crafted menorahs from plastic prehistoric animal toys.

In silver or gold tone, these menorahs are fancy, shiny, and downright fun. Lisa also offers candle holders for your year-round lighting needs. And, according to Lisa’s Etsy profile, it sounds like more exciting projects are underway.

We created The Vanilla Studio years ago as an empty container to hold our creative dreams and endeavors. It’s currently a home for a menagerie of hand-crafted animal menorahs. Stay tuned to see what else we put in the box!

Felted Calvin & Hobbes

Yoopidou from Hawaii doesn’t need Bill Watterson to come out with any licensed Calvin and Hoobes toys…she can make her own and have them turn out perfect!

Yoopidou needle felted Hobbes and Calvin over a wire frame so they be poseable.

Make sure you take a look at her Craftster posting. She has a bunch of photos that she recreated from iconic Calvin and Hobbes strips. On May 21, 2014, her posting was voted as a featured project as well.

Doctor Who Crafts and Trivia

Hopefully, you all aren’t too tired of seeing Doctor Who crafts (although, let’s be honest, you’re on Geek Crafts, so what were you expecting?), because I have some more for you! These are especially for those who don’t knit or crochet, or just those who want nerdy plushie toys and jewelry!

First up is a tutorial for sonic screwdriver earrings, posted by Julie over on Crafty Tardis.

Sonic Screwdriver earrings

“Starting with a 2 inch silver tone headpin, I used some glass seed beads (black, blue, and silver), metal tube beads, a clear glass tube bead for the extended conformation, and a few smooshed crimp beads (squashing them flat into donut shape). I finished by trimming the headpin with wire cutters and then bending a loop with pliers.”

They can be used as earrings, for a necklace, or even a charm bracelet!

The next craft is for you sewing-types out there – your own Adipose plushie! (They were definitely one of my favorite aliens – they’re just so cute!)

ImaginaryBF kindly gave us both the instructions and pattern for these adorable guys, also on Crafty Tardis. You’ll need white polar fleece, and black and white embroidery thread.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must go prepare for Doctor Who Trivia Night! Geeks Who Drink are hosting a bunch of Doctor Who Trivia nights at several places all over the US TONIGHT! You can check out the times and places here.
