Crochet BMO Scarf

close-up-of-bmo-scarf

Rose Henderson actually wrote this crochet pattern in 2014, but since the southeast part of the United States is finally starting to get chilly, I thought it was time to share this.

Rose said her 9 year old asked if she could make him a scarf that no–one else had at school. They compiled a list of his favorite TV programs, had a look around to see what was available in local stores and whittled the list down to BMO from Adventure Time. Thoughtfully, Rose posted her entire tutorial on this scarf on her blog, and even included a PDF of the pieces of BMO’s face, to trace onto felt.

Amazingly enough, this was Rose’s first crochet tutorial and it’s very clear and concise.

Simple Crafts For Halloween

fdsjyhy

Sometimes, the best Halloween decorations are the simplest. Case in point, check out the windows in this house. The creatures you see in the windows are spray painted, flattened cardboard boxes. The boards are on the lower windows are painted polyurethane foam board that was cut into “planks” and painted.

SneakersRobinson posted his Halloween decorations recently to Imgur. He said he finally got his own place after living with roommates for a while, so he decided to do Halloween right this year by making his own Halloween decorations.

He started by making fake 2×4’s, by buying big sheets of polyurethane foam board and cutting them into planks. After cutting, he used a nail to make groves and some knots into the “wood”. From there, he got some light and dark drown spray paint and got to work. He said he also noticed that if you spray some spots excessively the paint will eat away some of the foam board which made making the knots a lot easier.

He then got the largest boxes he could find and cut them so they would lay flat. He looked online for some inspiration and started drawing an outline by freehand. After he had his outline, he cut them out with a box cutter.

After they were all cut out, he spray painted them black so they looked like shadows in the windows. When he was ready to start decorating, all SneakerRobinson had to do was place these guys in his windows.

Make Your Very Own Bat Mobile

bat-mobile-005-md109033_vert

Unfortunately, it’s not four-wheeled Batmobile we’d all love to take a spin in, but rather a Halloween decoration from Martha Stewart.

Peek into your backyard and your art-supply drawer — odds are you have everything you need to make this bat mobile.

Trace her free bat templates onto black card stock; cut them out and fold them according to template instructions. Make a small hole in the center of each bat with a tack. Poke a piece of thread through each hole, and knot it. Tie the bats to a found branch (painting it black is optional). Then hang the branch from two pieces of thread secured to the top of the window with flat thumbtacks.

One pointer I’d like to add: start keeping your eyes open for the right branch weeks before you start your Halloween decorating. When you find the one(s) you like, bring them into a garage or some other climate controlled area, and let them dry out completely. It’s also a good time to check the branches over for bugs. And if you decide to paint your branch, here’s a great tutorial on the best way to do it.

Floral Cross-Stitch Street Installations

wlw6plo

Raquel Rodrigo has created some amazing large scale floral cross stitch street artworks. This needs to become as popular as yarn bombing was.

lqivdef

Set designer and artist Raquel Rodrigo brings the macro details of cross-stitch embroidery to building facades around Madrid. Her colorful installations are prepared beforehand with enlarged cross-stitch techniques utilizing thick string wrapped on wire mesh before each is unrolled and affixed to a surface. The decorative pieces create a fun, pixelated texture that looks completely different close up versus at a distance.

Jaws Necklace

vjuxbod

I came across this Jaws necklace on Imgur the other day. There wasn’t any information about it. It couldn’t be too terribly difficult to make. Start with come clay, paints and get some chains. And as a fan of “Bruce the Shark,” I may end up giving this a try.

But I decided to take a peek on Etsy to see if I could find it. While I couldn’t find it on Etsy, I did find a very cool alternative.

The design on this slice of birch tree is a combination of colored pencils and ink. It’s been sealed with a high-gloss epoxy and coated with a matte varnish. Despite being sealed, Kahahuna doesn’t recommend getting this piece excessively wet because it may cause the wood to swell and damage the design. All buttons and pendants are made one at a time and none are exactly the same. Necklace is fitted on a 14″ link chain or hemp cord. The birch bark may unravel over time, but this does not harm the design and adds to the character. It’s available on brass chain or shimmery wire-wrapped hemp, both with lobster clasps.

Kahahuna also sells this necklace for only $20.00.

1966 Batgirl Costume Inspired Purse

1966-batgirl-purse-01

BenaeQuee of Brooklyn recently made this Batgirl-inspired purse for a friend to go with her Batgirl costume, for DragonCon. They went back and forth and BenaeQuee was given creative freedom to create this. Her friend already owns two more of BenaeQuee’s bag and several accessories, the friend knew something awesome was bound to happen.

This is the Swoon Rosie pattern and it was BenaeQuee’s first time making it. She had to create the bat from Pellon 808 backed yellow cotton fabric with HTV heat pressed on in gold and yellow. That was then appliqued onto the front flap by hand cranking her sewing machine. Rosie is a comfortable crossbody bag with a casual style. It features a long adjustable strap, two zippered pockets and a roomy main compartment.
