Tutorial Tuesday: Dinosaur Necklace!

Via Craftster

So, here’s something every self-respecting geek-crafter needs to know.

Shrink plastic can be anything you desire.

And like a towel, a pair of pliers are essential kit you should never leave the house without.

Craft blogger Cthuliz shows us all how to make her awesome shrink plastic dinosaur necklace in this great tutorial.

Hogwart’s Textbooks

How often, while reading a Harry Potter novel, did you envision yourself, wand in hand, saying wingardium leviosa to a feather, making it float above everyone’s head, and thus becoming Professor Flitwick’s star pupil? Loads? Well, you can come one step closer to feeling like a student of Hogwarts with these awesome handbound journals/notebooks made by CelesteFrittata.  The titles cover the whole gamut of Hogwart’s classes like Care of Magical Creatures to Advanced Potions.  You can also pick up Owl Post stationery and your very own Quibbler notebook.

I have a couple of Harry Potter fans in my life that might like to find one of these under the tree this Christmas.

Check out their full line of awesomeness here.

Another Newbie

Kaitlen with parasol

Hey everyone! I’m Kaitlen, another new addition to the Geek Crafts family. First of all, I have a confession: I’m awful at video games. My hand-eye coordination is such that I’m more likely to injure myself with the controller than I am to actually beat a board. That didn’t stop me from working at some gaming mags, though…and developing a slight Katamari addiction.

Fortunately, I make up for my lack of gaming talent with my excellent crafting skills. Screenprinting, sculpting, painting, jewelry-making—I’ve done it all. (Except knit, for some reason.) I also seem to devote quite a lot of time to consuming great geek fodder such as Firefly, Futurama, Doctor Who, Buffy, and, well, a lot more. And it’s always a pleasure to combine my geekiness with my craftiness, like when I sculpt Flying Spaghetti Monster Christmas ornaments or make necklaces out of circuit boards.

I also run the lifestyle/fashion/design blog pinup.punkrockelite.org. Oh, and feel free to follow me on Twitter at @kaitlen or @punkpinup. I’ll be back here on Thursday—see you then!

Senior Citizens Day! Every Saturday!

Well, maybe not with discounts but I’m definitely the Senior Citizen of this crew at 57!

I’m Mary, usually known online as Lady Dragonsinger. Currently, I reside in the eastern side of Oklahoma with my pastor husband, who I refer to on line as ‘Sir Dragon Preacher’, and our two dogs, Rowan (a german shepherd who thinks she’s a norfolk terrier) and Piper (a norfolk terrier who thinks she’s a german shepherd). Together, we share a geeky fondness for the medieval period, all things celtic, Renaissance Faires, reading and exploring various places including but not limited to museums, used bookshops and ops shops (aka thrift shops). Most of my time, I have my crochet in hand which is something that was taught to me by my grandmother when I was nine. Knitting is one of the crafts I’ve learned with some assistance with  from talented friends and have been doing that for about six years. Over the years, I have also worked with counted cross stitch, needlepoint and a few other crafts.

My first geeky fandom was the Dragonriders of Pern series by the late Anne McCaffrey. Dragons have always fascinated me and it only took seeing the word in the title of her book to result it in being checked out and read as fast as I could. From there, it was a neverending love of her work, with the Dragonriders always holding the top of the list. It’s no surprise, that eventually, I would start to read the Harry Potter series and never leave it. Thanks to that series, I have made some amazing friendships both online and off. I’ve also really come to know my geek crafting. The first true geek oriented item I ever made was the Molly Sweater from a pattern available here.

When not working or crafting, you can find me writing drabbles for The Petulant Poetess or character rp for Wizards Without Boundaries.

Hopefully, when we meet up each Saturday, I can share some of the wonderful geek crafting that led me to join in!

Well, hello there!

Hello! I’m Coral, another new Geek Crafts blogger! I’m an engineer-turned-web librarian living in Anchorage, Alaska with three birds, a chinchilla, and my very geeky husband. Obviously, I’m a computer geek and a fan of science fiction/fantasy literature: it’s almost required for my job, right? I’m also into tabletop roleplaying games—Shadowrun was my first love, but I’ve enjoyed everything from Exalted to Call of Cthulhu and Dungeons & Dragons—and an ever-shifting array of fandoms. While I’m not a computer gamer, I’m married to one, so some of my crafts have followed that theme. See also: weighted companion cube! (I used plastic canvas and yarn, as well as some deceptively heavy filling.)

As for my craft habits, I have a deep and abiding love of oldey timey craft styles reapplied in funny, geeky, and snarky ways. I love geeky (and subversive) cross-stitch, especially, though I’ve been known to knit on a loom, to home brew beer and soda, to cook up a storm, and to attempt inadvisable things with a hot glue gun. Learning to crochet is definitely on my to-do list, because there are so many excellent patterns out there!

To the left, you can see a QR code cross stitch I did (the first and last ever). It actually resolves to text—a quote I particularly like.

Anyway, I plan to bring the library love, along with my love of SCIENCE!, internet memes, bird nerdery, good speculative fiction, terrible vampire novels, caffeine, RPGs, and bicycles to share with you every Wednesday. If you want to know what I’m up to on a daily basis, you can find me on my personal blog (mostly library stuff, with some craft content), on Twitter, or Google Plus. (If you add me on G+, drop me a note to tell me you belong in my craft and/or geek circles! :))

Bonus points if you get the ::1 joke. ;) If not, I explained it here.

Another new geeky blogger….

Hello out there, this is gia or “hookedhands” as I am sometimes referred to by the store that sells my dolls or anyone who stumbles upon my blog where I discuss various yarnbombs (i.e. Totoro, boobs for breast cancer, etc etc.)  and other projects.  I also make what I think are underrepresented pop culture dolls and sell them over here (think daria, the big lebowski, porco rosso).  I have a 3 year old who is a total geek in the making.  This is totally my fault.  I’m hoping his good looks will make up for the longwinded discussions he’s bound to have with people about Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

I’ll be one of your resident bloggers.  I’ll try not to link to too many ewok crafts.  Look for me on Tuesdays.

Here’s a little picture of my latest creation.  The dude just never stops abiding:
