Crafting Christmas Movies

I have a few movies I watch over and over and over again this season, that always put me in the holiday spirit. And I’m sure most of you, like me, can’t sit still and watch a movie. You have to be doing something, whether it’s crocheting, sewing, cutting, drawing, (anything you can do on the couch, really).

Well this season, why not make something from your favorite movie, while watching you favorite movie. You could even race and see if you can finish your craft before the movie is over. No pausing the DVD for bathroom breaks, that’s cheating. Here are a few I’ve found.

If you grew up in the 80’s, like me, you know all about the forgotten Henson Classic, The Christmas Toy. It was released on DVD a few years ago, which is great, because my VHS copy recorded off the TV was really wearing out. Now you can make your own Mew, and have the “cat toy, people toy” argument until your heart’s content.

Check out CRAFTYISCOOL1 ‘s beautiful work.

My next favorite is another Henson great, Emmet Otter’s Jug-band Christmas. (something about Jim

Henson and Christmas just go hand in hand) Check out this amazing needle felted work from REMAINSOFTHEDAY.

The Muppets make great crafting projects, because they are made out of felt to begin with. It’s a lot easier to recreate than a person, although, this next boy looks pretty amazing in felt. Here’s an Emmet Otter I crocheted.

Check out Ralphie’s bunny costume, from A Christmas Story, made by Etsy Shop My Little Cabbage.

So go grab your supplies and your remote, cuddle up on the couch with that blanket you made last week, and whip up some great crafts to go with your movie. How cute would it be to give someone the DVD of a great Christmas movie, and one of these crafts to go with it?

Ooo, now I know what to get my Secret Santa……….

Awesome Mario Birthday Cake of WIN

I absolutely have to share this great geek-cake-of-win that was made by my friend Kirsty for her husband, John’s 30th Birthday. John is co-founder of gaming blog and retro console shop angrydinosaur.co.uk, so this cake works on so many levels.

Gotta love that little Shy Guy down there, but wait, no Luigi?

Left 4 Dead Health Pack earrings

I like to think of myself as a helpful person.  I bring a net positive to most situations.

Left4Dead Healthpacks

Except…
There is a specific circumstance during which, I have found, I am downright useless:

Zombie Apocalypses
Gentle reader, should there be a zombie apocalypse, you do not want me anywhere near you. I’ll be worthless.

I will stumble around with my pistols, clumsily shooting at your butt, and thrash about in Boomer Bile. And if you get hurt, oh goodness, if  you were to get hurt, I will have already used up my healthpack. By accident. When I was trying to equip a flashlight.
That is what brings us here, kids. I am loving these ‘lil Left 4 Dead polymer clay earrings. Hand sculpted, painted, and glazed, the earrings are mounted on pure silver fish-hooks. They are small and light-weight as well, so you can wear them comfortably. More importantly, you can wear them and dream that you are the kind of person that always has a spare healthpack with them and they’ll stay on, even if you’re carrying a flashlight. Everyone’s butts are safe!

Apocalypse, interrupted. You are a hero, Kristina Tuck.

There is a lot more video game inspired jewelry where these guys came from, so be sure to check out Ms. Tuck’s Etsy page.

Geek Gift Guide Etsy Treasury

We’re deep in Christmas gift-list-making mode at our house, making sure the kids have made their lists, with enough options to divvy up amongst the grandparents, aunts & uncles, and us. Does anyone else have to coordinate all that? It’s enough to make me want to sing a version of “OY to the World”!

Fortunately, if you’re running out of ideas for the geek(s) in your life, Etsy’s got you covered with their Treasuries. Redd takes care of posting great Treasuries here, but for even more ideas, just search for “geek” at Etsy. I promise you will get many more ideas than you have gold-pressed latinum.

Do you have a geeky gift guide Treasury put together? Feel free to link us up in the Comments!

Today I would like to share with you the skills of a talented lady, Lydia Niziblian.

Here in her Shottlebop Store, among the many spectacular creations, she pays tribute to the delightfully geeky Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by bottling the Babel fish to provide us with “Instant Universal Translation”

It is available as a rocking necklace or as a awesome pair of earrings.

As well as making delightful bottled concoctions she also works with silver and gold to create unique handmade jewellery.

Marjee-reporting for duty

Zelda wants you to know I am writing this post instead of petting her.

Hello there! My name is Marjee and I’ll be your Monday blogger here at Geek Craft!  Here is what you might want to know about me…I am a former high school chemistry teacher who has spent some time designing video games for both PBS and National Geographic (educational ones, natch!)  These days I’m the technology specialist at a math and science magnet high school. I am also completing my doctorate degree in research and evaluation, which involves geeky topics such as epistemology and statistics.

In addition to my geek-for-profit, I pursue geeky-ness for pleasure as well. This includes activities such as the watching and obsessive re-watching of science/ speculative fiction (Star Trek, X-Files, BSG, Buffy, Dr. Who, etc.,). I also read and write comics, love vegetarian cooking, enjoy spoiling my two yappy little dogs, Bowser and Zelda and adventuring with my husband. My own craft passions include sewing, softies, and crochet. My proficiency level is nowhere near the make-your own pattern stage, so I’m eager to learn from all of you guys. You can see my jibber-jabber on twitter as well, @mchmiel
