An introduction, and Star Wars

Hello all! I’m Erin, one of the newbies here! I’ve only been seriously crafting for a year and a half, but I’ve been a geek all my life (I don’t remember a time when I hadn’t seen Star Wars). I’m a huge History fan (it was my major in college) and huge TV watcher and bibliophile. I mostly do embroidery, but I love seeing every kind of craft. I can’t wait to share all the geeky goodness I find with you!

Speaking of which…
An introduction, and Star Wars
It’s almost Christmas, but I’m still decorating. Do you know what my place needs? Snowflakes. Star Wars snowflakes!

Inspired by the snowflake her son was making, a Boba Fett/Storm Trooper snowflake was born. She also made a Vader-flake (and was kind enough to include patterns). After getting passed around the web, ThinkGeek found them and made more patterns, including a TIE fighter, Chewie, and a Dalek.

Geek Crafts at Maker Faire!

If you are in the Bay Area (or can get there this weekend), don’t miss the magnificent Maker Faire! There is way too much going on to try to list here, but check out their list of makers and weekend schedule for tons of details. Here are a couple of things I’m most excited about…

Friend of geekcrafts Bonnie Burton is teaching a rad craft demo: make a paper-bag puppet of Admiral Akbar from her new Star Wars Craft Book. I went to her Yoda doll demo at Maker Faire a couple of years ago and it was amazing!

Meanwhile, Particle Zoo will have her excellent subatomic particle plushies for sale in the Bazaar Bizarre section. Her motto: It has to be scientifically accurate, and it has to be cute. (Thanks Rachel!)

Stitching Endeavor’s De-orbit Map

Space geek extraordinaire Rachel Hobson live-embroidered the space shuttle Endeavor’s de-orbit pattern as it returned to Earth this week. She’d already covered the Endeavor’s launch for MAKE: live from Houston, but welcoming it back with live-crafting is taking it to the next level!

Rachel says,

How could I not stitch the deorbit map of the first shuttle I’ve seen launch? I didn’t want to jinx her landing, though, by stitching the first deorbit map only to find that she was delayed or rerouted to some other location.

Just more than one hour before she was set to land, she was given the all clear for weather and the go ahead to execute the deorbit burn that would commit her to landing. I literally jumped out of my chair, ran to my craft room and gathered my supplies. I had one scrap of black fabric, perfect for the background. I grabbed one of my many containers of embroidery floss, and it just happened to have every color I needed. I printed the map, transferred it with carbon paper and was off.
