Get your geek on for Child’s Play

This cool charity campaign was recently posted on the Geeks United in Crafts Facebook group wall, and I immediately knew I had to share it here.

Mom's Basement Charity Etsy Shop for Child's Play

Mom’s Basement, a geek community blog, has created a charity Etsy shop to support Child’s Play, an organization that raises money to provide video games, toys, movies and other entertainment to children’s hospitals. All of the money made in this shop will be donated to Child’s Play.

One of the items donated is this fabulous cross-stitched quote from Dresden. I can easily envision it adorning a wall in my own home.

You also gotta love this Little Miss Goth tile pendant, and these upcycled Supergirl earrings.

Crochet Cat Bus

Crochet Cat BusIt’s Totoro week on Geekcrafts!  (No, it really isn’t)  What better way to get around all week than in your very own Cat Bus!  It should be noted that the bus is crocheted and fairly small, so it would help if you are also fairly small and don’t actually feel the need to go anywhere.

Etsian AmiAmigos has plenty of Totoro crafts for the Totoro lover in your house, but who could resist this awesome Cat Bus?  I know I couldn’t.

See for yourself how totally awesome this cat bus is!

Game Review: Kirby’s Epic Yarn

So I recently got a Wii again and the first game I bought was Kirby’s Epic Yarn. It’s like the game was marketed directly at me. I love little pink Kirby, use the word “epic” more than I should, and have an epic yarn stash.

This game is beyond adorable. The visuals are fantastic and the dialog actually makes you laugh out loud. The story is ridiculous as well.

The evil sorceror, Yin-Yarn, unraveled Patch Land led by Price Fluff, and it’s your job to patch them back together. Did I mention that Yin-Yarn sucks people up into his magic sock and turns them into yarn? No? Well, he does.

Because Kirby is now made of yarn, he’s no longer able to suck up bad guys and steal their abilities. How do you make do? You can lasso them with your yarn and roll them in a ball and throw them at other bad guys. Awesome! You can also turn into a variety of things at certain points in the levels. Like a dolphin, because why not?

When you play Multiplayer the second player plays as Prince Fluff. That’s right, Prince Fluff. The cuteness is at least doubled. If you’re able to play with someone else, I highly recommend it. You can jump off each other’s head or throw one of you to a high up, hard to reach spot.

The things I didn’t like were far out weighed by the things I loved. The main story line is far too short. I beat the game in less than 48 hours. I would have liked it to be longer but since it’s probably for a child and not a late-20something, it makes sense. Some of the badges still seem impossible to unlock. I don’t want to have to turn to a walkthrough but at the present time, it’s looking like that might be the case.

I simply cannot recommend this game enough. It’s funny, it’s adorable, it’s made of yarn and it is in fact epic. We got rid of our original Wii because there just weren’t any games really worth having for it. Now there is and it feels like pants.

Fright Night UK Premiere

Fright Night PosterIf there are two things I love, they are campy horror movies and David Tennant. And Colin Ferral. Wait…that’s three. For us Americans, Fright Night is coming out THIS FRIDAY.

For a few of us lucky to be in London this past Sunday, and get tickets to The Empire Big Screen event at the O2, Fright Night was an experience to remember. Hosted by David Tennant himself (adorable as always) and in RealD–it was an experience to remember. The crowd filled up fast, and the buzz was building long before they let us into the theatre.

As for the film itself, I was hesitant to view both a remake AND a 3D movie, even if it did feature two impossibly hot men doing hot things. First and foremost, they hit it out of the park with the 3D, I’ve never been impressed with how 3D is used in horror movies until Sunday night. The script was great, enough changes to make this it’s own, modern film, but close enough to the original that the only thing purists will have to whine about is “It’s supposed to take place in the eighties!”.

The film featured lots of great laughs and plenty of good suspense and jump out of your seat moments, a fantastic performance by David Tennant as Peter Vincent (don’t worry, he is only in that awful wig and fake goatee for a few minutes). For those of you reading who aren’t already familiar with the story line, a teenager discovers that a vampire is living next door, preying on his friends and neighbors, and enlists the help of a famed “vampire expert” to destroy him. I could go on and on about how fun this movie was. I am positive I will be buying another ticket to see it in theater (again) when I am stateside.

And, just because, here is a picture of me, my niece, and Martin Barry of Empire Magazine, a totally great guy, even if he was making fun of me a bit. Martin,if you’re reading–Hello!Martin Barry Empire Magazine
